Four Storm Players Earn All-NEAC Honors

July 18, 2008

The Keuka College women’s tennis team accomplished a couple of firsts this season.  They won its first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season championship by going 5-1.  They also had a player named to the All-NEAC teams for the first time, four players to be exact.

The Storm were led by rookie Megan McGowan (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) who played in flight No. 1 in both singles and doubles.  McGowan finished with a 7-7 singles mark and was the runner-up in the NEAC Tournament championships to earn a spot on the All-NEAC second team.  In doubles, McGowan and teammate Alison Liberty (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood) went 9-5 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference play.  The duo won the top doubles flight at the championships to both be named to the All-NEAC first team.

Already named to the All-NEAC first team in doubles, Liberty also held her own at the No. 3 singles slot for Keuka.  Liberty finished 6-7 overall and was third at NEACs to be named to the All-NEAC honorable mention squad.

Keuka’s No. 2 singles player, freshman Beth Kushner (Angola, N.Y./Elden), finished the regular season 7-4 overall and won flight No. 2 at the NEAC championships to earn a spot on the All-NEAC first team.

Sophomore Jennifer Heinrich (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 4-6 playing mostly in No. 4 singles during the regular season.  But Heinrich stepped it up during the championships to be named to the All-NEAC honorable mention squad.

Storm Take Third at NEACs

July 18, 2008

The women’s tennis team, who won the North eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season, finished third at the NEAC team championships on Friday.  The following day, in the individual portion of the NEAC championships, four different players were named to the All-NEAC teams for their performances.  Penn State-Berks defeated Wells College to win the team championship, but since the Nittany Lions are provisional, Wells will accept the AQ to the NCAA Tournament.

Keuka, the No. 1 seed, had to face the No. 4 seeded Express of Wells College in the first match of the team championships.  Wells was the only NEAC to beat Keuka during the regular season.  Unfortunately for the Storm, the Express would pull off the upset, winning 5-2.  Keuka won No. 2 and 3 singles but lost No. 1 & 4 while also dropping all three doubles matches.  Rookie Beth Kushner (Angola, N.Y./Elden) won her singles match (6-1, 7-6 [7-2]) in flight No. 2 while sophomore Alison Liberty (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood) won her flight No. 3 singles match (7-5, 6-2).

Keuka then squared off against No. 3 Keystone College in the consolation match.  The Storm rebounded to win all three singles matches that finished as well as two of the three doubles matches to win 5-1.  Freshman Megan McGowan (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) won No. 1 singles (6-2, 7-6, [8-6]).  Kushner won flight No. 2 easily (6-2, 6-1) while sophomore Anna Peluso (Ontario, N.Y./Greene) won flight No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2).  McGowan and Liberty teamed up to win No. 1 doubles (8-1) while Kushner and junior Katie Bremer (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) won No. 2 doubles (8-1).

The next day at the individual championships, McGowan, who was seeded No. 2 in the first flight of singles, defeated her opponent from Keystone College (6-4, 7-6, [7-5]) to reach the championship match.  McGowan’s opponent from Baptist Bible College went on to win (6-3, 6-1) earning McGowan All-NEAC second team honors.

Kushner, the No. 1 seed in flight No. 2, rolled to two wins and a spot on the All-NEAC first team.  She won her first match against Penn State-Harrisburg (6-1, 6-3) and then defeated her Penn State-Berks opponent (6-2, 6-4) in the championship match.

Liberty, the No. 4 seed in the third flight, barely lost her first match to the top seed from Wells (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) before rebounding to win (7-5, 6-0) against Penn State-Berks in the consolation match.  Liberty was named to All-NEAC honorable mention team.

Sophomore Jennifer Heinrich (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) lost her first match in flight No. 5 to Wells (4-6, 6-0, 6-2).  The No. 2 seed then came back to narrowly beat her opponent from Keystone (6-1, 7-6 [7-3]) to earn a spot on the All-NEAC honorable mention team.

Senior Kay McGinty (Voorheesville, N.Y./C. A. Bouton) lost both of her matches in flight No. 6.  Falling (6-3, 6-4) to Penn State-Berks and (6-1, 6-7 [1-7], 6-4) to Keystone.

In doubles, the duo of McGowan and Liberty teamed up to win both of its matches and take home first place and a spot on the All-NEAC first team.  The top seed, McGowan and Liberty won (8-6) against Keystone and then (8-6) against Penn State-Berks in the championship.

Heinrich and Peluso lost both of their matches in flight No. 3 doubles.  Falling (8-4) to Penn State-Berks and (8-6) to Wells College.

Double the Pleasure

July 18, 2008

With the fall season not quite at an end, Keuka College is already reaping the benefits of a successful fall campaign.  The Storm’s women’s soccer and tennis teams both won North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season crowns and will look to carry its regular season success into the playoffs.

The Storm soccer team, currently at 10-3 overall, routed its NEAC opponents en route to an 8-0 conference mark with just one game remaining.  As a whole the Storm have outscored its opponents 56-14, but in its eight conference games, the Storm have scored 45 more goals (50-5) while not allowing a team to score more then once in a game.  This is the first regular season championship for Keuka since 2003.

Leading the Storm’s offensive onslaught all season has been senior forward Nicole Bondellio (Watkins Glen, N.Y./Corning West).  The three-time, soon to be four, All-NEAC first team performer has enjoyed her best season with Keuka.  Bondellio has netted 15 goals, passed out 8 assists, and amassed 38 points (all team highs) through the Storm’s 13 games.  Breaking every record in the books, literally, Bondellio will end her career as the Storm’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and points.

Bondellio’s two senior classmates, defensive specialist Kerry Callahan (Farmingville, N.Y./Bishop McGann-Mercy) and goalie Kristi Chamberlain (Oriskany Falls, N.Y./Madison), have also played key roles in the Storm’s success.  Callahan, a three-time All-NEAC selection, has continually stopped opponent’s offenses while Chamberlain has recorded 59 saves and posted an .808 save percentage.

Keuka’s rookies have also enjoyed sensational seasons, as the Storm’s No. 2, 3, and 4 scorers are all freshmen.  Forward Alyssa Hermenet (Williamson, N.Y./Williamson) has scored 11 goals and dished off 3 assists for a total of 25 points.  Herement also has a team-leading four game-winning goals.  Midfielder Molly McGuigan (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) and forward Courtney McLaughlin (Warsaw, N.Y./Letchworth) have done their part scoring for the Storm.  McGuigan has eight goals and two assists (18 points) while McLaughlin has scored five goals and handed out four assists (14 points) while coming off the bench.

The Storm will host the NEAC Championships Nov. 2-3 as the No. 1 seed.

Not to be overshadowed, the Storm’s women’s tennis team won its first-ever NEAC regular season crown in just its fourth season as a NCAA Division III sport.  Keuka stands at 5-5 overall but dominated its conference rivals to the tune of 5-1.

Leading the way for the young Storm squad has been its rookies, headed by Megan McGowan (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia)McGowan, playing in No. 1 singles and doubles, posted a 5-1 mark in singles and a perfect 6-0 doubles record in conference play.  Overall, McGowan sits at 5-5 in singles play and 6-4 in doubles.

Keuka’s No. 2 singles player, Beth Kushner (Angola, N.Y./Elden), has enjoyed a 3-4 mark overall while going undefeated (3-0) in the NEAC.  Kushner has also enjoyed success in No. 2 doubles, going 2-1 in conference play.  Sophomore Alison Liberty (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood), still a rookie to the Storm tennis team, has gone 4-2 in No. 3 singles conference action.  McGowan’s partner in No. 1 doubles, Liberty has played a huge role in the duo’s perfect 6-0 mark.

Keuka is seeded No. 1 for this weekend’s (Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27) NEAC Championships.  As for individual seedings, McGowan is the No. 2 singles player in the first flight while Kushner is the No. 1 seed in flight No. 2.  Liberty is the No. 4 seed in the third flight, while McGowan and Liberty are the top seed in the No. 1 doubles flight.

Storm Fall to Saxons

July 18, 2008

The women’s tennis team finished its regular season by dropping a 9-0 decision to the Saxons of Alfred University on Wednesday.  Keuka falls to 5-5 overall while Alfred improved to 8-3 on the season.

Despite the loss the Storm found out good news as they finished the regular season with a 5-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) record which ties them with Penn State-Berks.  However, the Storm defeated the Nittany Lions 5-4 during the season, therefore winning the tie-breaker and the NEAC regular season championship.  The Storm will now be the No. 1 seed in the NEAC Tournament.

Against Alfred, the Storm lost all six singles matches and all three doubles matches to a very good Saxon squad.

The Storm will next compete in the NEAC Championships at the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, PA on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27.  Things will get started at about 10 am on Friday.
