Fredricks Named NEAC Player of the Year
July 18, 2008
After going 16-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and winning both the regular season and tournament crowns, it was no surprise to see the Storm players well represented on the All-Conference teams. It was also no shocker that head coach Jamie Burke was voted as the Coach of the Year by her peers.
Headlining the long list of players recognized was rookie first basemen Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) who was named the conference Player of the Year. Fredricks, also named to the All-NEAC first team, led the Storm with a single season record five home runs while batting an impressive .406. Fredricks also led the Storm in at bats (101), hits (41), tied for the lead in doubles (6), RBIs (38), slugging percentage (.653), and putouts (204).
Also named to the All-NEAC first team was sophomore right fielder Jessica VanScoter (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood). VanScoter batted .360 on the year while clubbing a team-high five triples. She finished third on the team in hits (32) and RBIs (23).
Senior ace Jen Shaughnessy (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy) was named to the All-NEAC second team after going 12-6 on the hill with a 2.49 ERA. Shaughnessy, also named the NEAC Tournament MVP, struck out 87 batters while holding hitters to just a .218 batting average in 104.2 innings of work. She also batted .344 on the year with 16 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
Joining Shaughnessy on the All-NEAC second team was classmate Amanda Witter (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell). The 4-year starting shortstop batted .319 while leading the team with 32 runs scored and six doubles.
Rookies Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and Liz Ripp (Glenfield, N.Y./South Lewis) were also chosen to the second team. Bilbow led the team in batting (.417) while setting a school record by going 21-for-21 in stolen bases. The leftfielder finished second on the team with 35 hits and 30 runs. Ripp manned the hot corner and batted .333 with 27 hits and 19 runs scored.
Freshman centerfielder Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) was selected to the honorable mention team after batting .298. Engelbert finished second on the team with 24 RBIs while clubbing 28 hits and scoring 23 runs.
