Storm Fall to Yellowjackets

July 18, 2008

The Keuka College men’s soccer team’s magical season came to end in the first round of the NCAA tournament with a 3-0 loss to the Yellowjackets from the University of Rochester.  Rochester, the No. 5 team in the nation advances to face the winner of the Hobart vs. Fredonia State game.  Keuka ends the season at 10-7-1 while Rochester improves to 14-2-2.

The Yellowjackets of Rochester wasted no time gaining an advantage on the Storm as they used a foul by Keuka sophomore Tyler Shaw (Portville, N.Y./Portville) in the the third minute of the game to score the games first goal.  The foul occurred right outside the box and Scott Cady headed in the free kick taken by Patrick Ripp.

Keuka tried to answer as senior Ian Stevens (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) kicked three straight corner kicks in the 5th minute of play but all of them were defended perfectly by the Yellowjackets.

Rochester then went up 2-0, again off a foul by the Storm just outside the box.  This time junior Mark Lemieux (Boonville, N.Y./Adirondack) had a questionable yellow card called on him and Hans Julianus took advantage by kicking in a goal off a rebound in the 37th minute.  The score would remain 2-0 at the break as Rochester out-shot the Storm 8-0.

The Yellowjackets third and final goal came in the 74th minute, once again off a foul by the Storm outside the box.  This time it was a yellow card called on freshman Brian Cunliffe (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili).  Rochester’s Phil Proud then passed a perfect pass to Matt Sulkin who blasted a shot past the Storm’s Mike Meskill (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) in the upper left corner.

Keuka collected its first and only shot when Stevens broke free and ripped a shot that was saved by the diving Michael Peacock.  Keuka was out-shot 10-1 in the second half.  The game was a very physical one as the Storm finished with three yellow cards and a red card by junior Brandon Scott (Fillmore, N.Y./Fillmore)Scott will now have to miss the Storm’s first game of the 2008 season.  The Storm ended with 20 fouls while Rochester collected 18.

Meskill ended with 5 saves in goal while allowing the three goals in 90 minutes of action.

Storm Dominate All-Conference Teams

July 18, 2008

The Keuka College men’s soccer team proved that they were the best in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) by winning the tournament championship and earning a birth into the NCAA Tournament.

But if there was any doubt, the release of the All-Conference teams will take care of that.  Keuka placed seven players on the respective teams, including three on the first team.

The Storm stand at 10-6-1 overall and after winning the NEAC Tournament championship with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia Biblical University this past Saturday, will represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament.  The first ever trip to the NCAAs for Keuka’s men’s soccer team.

Leading the way all season has been junior forward Brandon Scott (Fillmore, N.Y./Fillmore) making him an easy choice for the All-NEAC first team.  Scott leads the team with 15 goals, 4 game-winning goals, and 33 points.  A three time All-NEAC performer, Scott currently has 31 career goals which places him tied for third at Keuka.

Joining Scott on the All-NEAC first team were senior midfielder Ian Stevens (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) and junior defender Justin Viele (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia)Stevens was the team’s third leading scorer with seven goals, 4 assists, and 18 points.  He is currently tied for sixth all-time in goals (24).  Viele makes his second straight appearance on the All-NEAC first team and helped Keuka allow only eight goals in ten NEAC games this season.

Senior midfielder Bobby Lee (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) and sophomore goalie Mike Meskill (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) were both selected to the All-NEAC second team.  Lee finished with two goals and four points while Meskill collected 68 saves and recorded four shutouts.  Meskill is second all-time at Keuka with 13 career shutouts.

Rookie forward Jack Reece (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) and senior defender Sean Barker (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) were both voted on to the All-NEAC honorable mention team.  Reece was the Storm’s second leading scorer with eight goals, a team-high seven assists, and 23 points.  Barker was a main reason that Keuka’s “D” allowed opponents to manage just a .097 shot percentage.

Scott Named RACA Athlete of the Week

July 18, 2008

The No. 2 seeded men’s soccer team pulled off a slight upset as they defeated the No. 1 seeded Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical University 2-1 in the NEAC Tournament Championship on Saturday.  Keuka will accept the automatic qualifier and represent the NEAC in the NCAA Tournament.  Keuka improves to 10-6-1 overall while Philadelphia Biblical falls to 15-5-2.

Keuka dominated Philadelphia Biblical in shot totals for the game, holding them to just four shot attempts each half while ripping 18 of their own.  Despite Keuka’s defense limiting the Crimson Eagles to just four shots in the opening half, PBU still managed to score’s the games first goal in the 41st minute.  Graham Foster was set up by Derek Mosely for PBU’s lone goal.  The score would remain 1-0 in favor of PBU at the break.

With time running out on the Storm, senior Ian Stevens (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) evened the score in the 63rd minute off a feed from junior Brandon Scott (Fillmore, N.Y./Fillmore).  The goal was Stevens seventh of the season while Scott picked up his third assist.  About ten minutes later Keuka struck again as Scott netted his team leading 15th goal of the season in the 74th minute.  The goal would be the game-winner, Scott’s fourth of the season.  Scott would be named the Tournament MVP after scoring two of Keuka’s four goals and finishing with an assist in the Storm’s two games.
