The Keuka College volleyball team opened up its 2008 season by posting a strong 3-1 record at the D’Youville College Spartan Tournament.

Keuka started off by defeating Cazenovia College and SUNY Morrisville on the first day of the Tournament.  On the second day, Keuka fell to the Hawks of Hilbert College before rebounding to beat Cazenovia again.

In the Storm’s first match against the Wildcats of Cazenovia, Keuka dropped the first two games (21-25 and 22-25) before taking the final three (25-16, 25-18, and 15-8) to pick up the win.  Senior setter Diana Frank (West Valley, N.Y./West Valley) led the way by dishing off 28 assists and killing 8 shots.  Sophomore Raelle Naegely (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) led the Storm with 12 kills and 4 service aces.  Classmate Kate Kraus (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) finished with a team-high 12 digs.

Against Morrisville State, Keuka won in three sets (25-20, 26-24, and 25-16).  Naegely again finished with 12 kills while Frank passed off 17 more assists.  Rookie Emily Hargrave (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye) had two solo blocks and 2 assisted blocks.

25-15 win in game number two.  Keuka then lost a close third game (24-26) before falling in the fourth set 13-25 for its first loss of the season.  A win would have set up a date with the host Spartans of D’Youville College in the finals.  D’Youville ended up defeating Hilbert to win its own tourney.  Naegely led Keuka with 10 kills while Frank had 27 assists.  Hargrave served up 6 aces while Kraus dug 11 more balls.

Facing Cazenovia for the second time in two days, Keuka won the first two games (25-21 and 25-16).  The Wildcats then made a comeback by winning the third and fourth games (21-25 and 27-29).  Keuka regrouped to thump Cazenovia in the fifth game 15-5.  Naegely finished with a career-high 24 kills and only 4 errors.  Frank also posted a career-high with 36 assists and was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance in the four matches.  Junior Holly McHale (Carthage, N.Y./Jefferson CC) finished with 7 kills while Kraus added 9 digs.

The Storm will next open up its home schedule with a tri-match against SUNYIT and Utica College on Saturday, Sept. 6.  Keuka will square off against SUNYIT at 10 am and the face Utica at 2 pm.  SUNYIT and Utica will play each other at noon.
