Pair of Rookies Lead Men’s Harriers at U. of R Invite

Keuka’a men’s cross country team took 16th out of 16 teams at the University of Rochester’s Yellowjacket Invitational on Saturday.

Running in its final invite before the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships, the Storm ended with a final score of 493.  Cornell University’s “B” squad won the 8K race held at the Genesee Valley Park with a total of 24.  SUNY Geneseo took second with a 63, followed by the University of Western Ontario (93), SUNY Fredonia (126), and the host Yellowjackets (130).

With 196 runners taken part in the race, Keuka was led by a pair of freshmen.  Ben Young (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) placed first for the Storm in 160th place with a time of 31:19.  Young’s finish is the first time this season that Scott Matheis (Barker, N.Y./Barker) wasn’t the Storm’s top finisher.  Matheis placed four spots behind in a time of 31:38.

Sophomore Chris Mazella (Depew, N.Y./Depew) ran in a time of 33:33 to place 182nd overall.  Classmate Kraig Connor (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and freshman DJ Haseley (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) finished fourth and fifth for the Storm, respectively.  Connor was 188th overall (34:06) while Haseley was 192nd (35:40).

The Storm will run in the NEAC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 1 at SUNY Cobleskill beginning at 2 pm.
