The Keuka women’s basketball team got off to a promising start before being swarmed by the No. 1 team in the country, the Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester, by a score of 71-47 in there first round match-up of the JPMorgan Chase Tournament on Tuesday.

Keuka jumped out to an 8-4 lead after five minutes of action, highlighted by four points from sophomore point guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo).  Rochester then went on a 23-4 run over the next ten minutes to go up by 15 (27-12) with five minutes remaining in the opening half.  During that stretch, Keuka shot just 1-for-14 from the floor.  Keuka outscored Rochester 8-7 over the final minutes of the half to hold a 14-point deficit (34-20) at the break.

The Yellowjackets depth really started to show in the second half as every couple of minutes fresh bodies would enter the game and score points.  Seven Rochester players finished with six or more points while 13 different players scored in all.

Keuka trailed by as many as 30 points in the second half but finished the game on a 9-3 run.  For the game the Storm shot only 21% (13-for-63) including just 4-for-17 from behind the arc.  Rochester shot 41% (29-for-71) from the floor while recording assists on 26 of its 29 field goals.  The Storm coughed up 24 turnovers but managed to make Rochester turn the ball over 17 times.  Rochester held a one-rebound advantage (49-48) in the game.

 going 8-for-12 from the free throw line.  Junior Melissa Thurston (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) was the only other Keuka player in double figures with 11 points.

Senior forward Angela Viggiani (Kent, N.Y./Albion) finished with 12 rebounds, five offensive.  Sophomore Nadia Madmoune (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) added 11 rebounds, including seven offensive, to go with her six points and game-high five steals.  Sophomore Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) connected on two of her four 3-point attempts to finish with seven points.

Rochester was led by the double-double performance of Julie Marriott who ended with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Keuka will next face No. 5 Roberts Wesleyan College this Thursday, Jan. 15 at RIT beginning at 1:30 pm.  Roberts lost a close game (60-62) to No. 4 seed SUNY Brockport in its first round match-up.  Other first round scores were No. 2 St. John Fisher over No. 7 RIT (58-45) and No. 3 Nazareth College over No. 6 SUNY Geneseo (62-53).
