Late Free Throws Doom Storm Against Nittany Lions

Two late free throws stole a win for the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Berks against the visting Storm on Friday, Feb. 13 as they outscored Keuka 62-61.
Keuka had defeated Berks 68-63 back on Jan. 31, but were unable to pull off the season sweep as they fall to 8-10 overall. The Nittany Lions improve to 7-15 on the year.
Keuka used a 50% shooting performance in the first half to pull out to a nine-point (36-27) halftime lead. The Storm hit six first-half 3-pointers while shooting 43% from behind the arc. Berks was held to just 33% from the floor and just three 3-pointers. Things flipped in the second half as Berks shot 48% while Keuka struggled to 28% from the floor as the Nittany Lions outscored the Storm 35-25. Despite the Storm’s shooting struggles in the second half, Keuka held a one-point lead (61-60) with just seconds remaining. Penn State-Berks then drove to the basket and drew a foul from sophomore center Tyler Pundt (Skaneateles Falls, N.Y./Skaneateles). The Nittany Lions drilled both free throws to steal the one-point victory.
Keuka dominated the boards with 43 to Berks’ 34 while also dishing off 17 assists to just nine for the Nittany Lions. Berks shot slightly better at 40% (23-for-57) to Keuka’s 39% (22-for-57).
Keuka had four players in double figures and two players post a double-double. Senior Garret Herthum (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three assists. Sophomore center Diamond Booker (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas Acad.) collected his fifth straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go with his three blocks before fouling out.
Junior Peter Durr (Barneveld, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) led all Keuka scorers with 14 points while senior Justin Stern (Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) scored 11 points while hitting three 3-pointers and passing out four assists.
Berks was led By Mark Fowler’s 14 points as Ryan Rooney added 13 points.
Keuka will next play host to D’Youville College this Tuesday, Feb. 17 with tip-off slated for 8 pm.
