Men’s Hoops Hold on for Two-Point Victory

The Keuka College men’s basketball team was able to hold off a late rally by the visiting Spartans of D’Youville College on Tuesday to hold on for a two-point (59-57) victory at the Weed Physical Arts Center.
The Storm complete the season sweep of the Spartans as they improve to 9-10 overall. D’Youville, who lost both games this season to Keuka by two points, falls to 9-14 on the year.
Keuka received a great first half from its junior point guard Alex Coleman (Elmira, N.Y./Southside) who scored 15 of the Storm’s 29 points in the opening period. Keuka held a five-point (29-24) lead at the break thanks to four first-half 3-pointers to zero for D’Youville.
In the second half, Keuka extended its lead to as many 11 points with just 7:57 remaining. D’Youville’s Romair Parrett then scored 15 straight points to get the Spartans to within five points (58-53) with 4:14 remaining. Lay ups by Greg Osika and Charles Walker put D’Youville within one-point at the 1:12 mark. Sophomore center Diamond Booker (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas Acad.) then hit one of his two free throws to give the Storm a 59-57 lead with 37 seconds still ticking on the clock. A missed lay up and a costly turnover spoiled the Spartans last two chances to tie the game.
For the game, Keuka shot 35% (21-for-60) while D’Youville shot 40% (24-for-60). Keuka held an 8-2 advantage in made 3-pointers while also pulling down 10 more rebounds (45-35).
Booker enjoyed his sixth straight game with a double-double as he posted 12 points and 14 rebounds. Booker went 3-for-5 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe to go with his game-high three blocks. Coleman finished with a game-high 19 points while hitting three 3-pointers.
Junior Peter Durr (Barneveld, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) added 11 points and a team-high four assists while senior Garret Herthum (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) helped Keuka hold the big rebounding advantage with 12 boards including seven offensive.
D’Youville received 17 points from Parrett including his 15 straight D’Youville points in the second half. Raysean Johnson added 11 points while Greg Osika had six points, five assists, and seven steals.
Keuka will next play host to rival Cazenovia College this Thursday, Feb. 19 beginning at 8 pm.
