Women’s Basketball Lose in NCAA’s to Scranton

The Keuka College women’s basketball team had it terrific 2008-09 season ended with a 73-42 loss to the Royals of the University of Scranton in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
The Royals, currently ranked No. 15 in the nation, will now face off against SUNY Cortland this Saturday, March 7, after Cortland knocked off St. Lawrenece 71-55.
The Royals improve to 24-4 overall and strectch its current winning streak to 17 games while the Storm snap its 15-game winning streak and finish up at 17-8.
Scranton shot early and often as they attempted 64 shots with almost half of them (31) being 3-pointers. Keuka was able to shoot just 49 times. A major reason why the Royals held a huge advantage in shot attempts was because of its offensive rebounds. Scranton had 22 offensive rebounds compared to 28 total rebounds for the Storm.
Keuka got off to sluggish start as they made just four first half field goals. Scranton netted five first half 3-pointers as they jumped out to a 20-point (36-16) lead at the break.
Keuka fared a little better in the second half making nine shots but still struggled from the floor (9-for-31). The Storm were able to cut the Royals lead to 15 points, twice, in the second half before Scranton put the game out of reach. Scranton sank 25 of its 64 shot attempts in the game (39%) while Keuka went 13-for-49 (27%). The Royals finished with 46 rebounds to Keuka’s 28.
Sophomore Nadia Madmoune (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) led the Storm with 10 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. The forward also led the Storm with eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Fellow sophomore Jessica Fink (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) was the only other Storm player to reach double figures as she also ended with 10 points. Fink drained two of the Storms three 3-pointers while going 4-of-8 from the floor. Sophomore guard Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) added eight points while junior Melissa Thurston (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) chipped in with four points and three steals. Sophomore Mindy Buck (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) totaled four points in six minutes of action.
Jennifer King led the Royals and all scorers with 19 points while hitting four 3-pointers. The Landmark Conference Player of the Year, Megan Kopecki, added 11 points, four assists, and four rebounds.
