Five Goals in Third Quarter Lift Storm to First Win

The Keuka College men’s lacrosse team used a five-goal, third period to snap a 4-4 tie with the Mustangs of Morrisville State and propel them to its first win of the season on Wednesday.  The final score was 10-7 in favor of the Storm.

Keuka now sits at 1-3 overall while Morrisville drops to 2-4 on the season.

The two teams traded goals in the first period with each team ending with two a piece.  In the second period, Keuka scored the first goal and was followed by two straight Morrisville tallies.  Keuka responded with its second goal of the period to tie the game at four heading into halftime.

The third period is where the Storm came alive, out-scoring Morrisville 5-1 to take a commanding 9-5 lead.  All five goals scored in the period were by seniors with Adam Farrell (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) and Drew Kunda (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) each netting two a piece and Greg Marsh (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) adding his first of the season.

Morrisville collected two goals in the fourth to Keuka’s one, but the damage was done in the third period.  For the game, Keuka held a two-shot advantage (31-29) while picking up 12 more ground balls (37-25).  The two teams split on face-offs (10-for-20).

Farrell and Kunda each finished with four goals a piece to make up 80% of the Storm’s scoring.  Farrell added an assist, giving him a team-high 12 points on the year.  Kunda is now tied with fellow senior TJ Radka (Waterloo, N.Y./Cayuga CC), who passed off two assists, for second on the Storm with nine points on the season.

Freshman Tim Mandell (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scored the other Keuka goal, his fourth of the season, while classmate Parker Gazda (Syracuse, N.Y./ESM) handed out an assist.  Senior Chris Sullivan (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) led the Storm with six ground balls and five won face-offs.

Morrisville got three goals and an assist from Eric Stein and two goals from Tim Bobbett.

Storm goalie Brett Leonard (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) stopped nine shots in goal while playing all 60 minutes and picking up his first win of the season.  Morrisville’s Michael Hinchey finished with 14 saves.

The Storm will next travel to SUNY Potsdam this Saturday, March 28 for a 1 pm showdown.
