Softball Opens ‘09 with 7-1 Win Over Berks

The Keuka College softball team used a combination of good pitching and timely hitting to begin its 2009 season with a 7-1 win over North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn State-Berks on Sunday, March 29. Game two was suspended in the fifth inning with Berks leading 2-1. The game will only be made up if necessary.
Berks falls to 5-12 overall and 2-1 in conference action while Keuka starts 1-0 both overall and in the NEAC.
The two teams remained scoreless after three full innings of play until Keuka put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Berks cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth before the Storm put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Keuka finished with 11 hits while the Nittany Lions managed just four singles.
Senior Kasie Davis (Johnsburg, N.Y./Johnsburg) teammed with sophomore Kate Kraus (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) to toss the four hitter on the hill. Davis picked up the win while going five and a third, and striking out three. Kraus earned the save while retiring all five batters she faced, two by strikeouts.
Senior catcher Stacy Schreiner (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) led the bats going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sophomores Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) and Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) both batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Keuka will next play host to Wilson College this Saturday, April 4 beginning at 1 pm.
