Women’s Lax Lose by One to Rival Cazenovia

The Keuka women’s lacrosse team saw its chances at a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season championship crushed after suffering a one-goal loss (6-7) to the Wildcats of Cazenovia College on Saturday.
The two teams will now square off for the NEAC Tournament title on May 2nd at Cazenovia College. With the loss Keuka falls to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEAC. Cazenovia improves to 10-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
Keuka started off good, scoring two of the first three goals before allowing Cazenovia to tally four straight goals near the end of the first half. The Wildcats would hold a two-goal (5-3) advantage at the break. Keuka responded by scoring the first three goals of the second half, including the go-ahead goal by sophomore Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) with 12:06 left to play. The score remained 6-5 in favor of Keuka with just under four minutes remaining when Cazenovia’s Erin Clinton tied the game up with a goal. The Wildcats Christy Foster then netted the game-winner for Cazenovia with just 1:08 left to doom the Storm’s hopes of a NEAC title.
Keuka starting goalie Audrey Randall (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) had a big game in between the pipes for the Storm, finishing with 13 saves on 23 Cazenovia shots. The Wildcats Cari Dwinal stopped 16 of Keuka’s 26 shot attempts. Caz finished with three more ground balls (22-19) while Keuka had three more draw controls (9-6).
Shafer led the Storm with three goals while senior Brenna Leach (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy)added a goal and an assist. Shafer now has 26 points (20 goals and six assists) on the year while Leach has 15 points (14 goals and one assist). Sophomore Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) scored her 11th goal of the season while senior Trista Partridge (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) added her ninth goal. Sophomore Jennifer Bush (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) passed off her sixth assist on the year.
Keuka will next play host to Utica College this Wednesday, April 22 beginning at 4 pm.
