Softball Earns Split with Alfred in Dramatic Fashion

Sophomore Liz Ripp turned a key double play for the Storm.
The Keuka College softball team split with the visiting Saxons of Alfred University on senior day at Keuka on Wednesday, April 29. The Storm lost the first game 7-3. In the game two, Keuka had a comeback win, beating the Saxons 4-3.
In game one, the Storm and the Saxons were tied 3-3 headed into the 7th inning. Alfred jumped out ahead of Keuka by plating four runs in the top of the 7th. Keuka was unable to fight back and went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. Lindsay Humberstone (Perry, N.Y./Perry) led the Storm with two hits and two RBIs. Senior Kasie Davis (Johnsburg, N.Y./Johnsburg) pitched a complete game for the Storm while only surrendering three earned runs. Alfred out hit Keuka 9-5.
In game two, the Storm pulled out a come from behind, extra innings victory. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Keuka’s first two batters got out. Then a single and two doubles tied the score at 3-3. In the top of the 8th, a spectacular double play turned by Liz Ripp (Glenfield, N.Y./South Lewis) prevented the go ahead run from scoring and ended the inning for the Saxons. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Domino Usiak (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) scored the game winning run off of an infield single hit by Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).
Bilbow, sophomore Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison), sophomore Morgan Engelbert (Elmir Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison), and Usiak all had two hits a piece. Kate Kraus (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) pitched eight stellar innings for the Storm allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out three.
The Storm out hit the Saxons 10-7, and will next play host to Wilson College at 10 am on Friday, May 1 in the NEAC Tournament.
