Baseball Upsets #2 PSH in Opening Game of Tourney

Junior Kyle Sherin pitched seven strong innings while striking out six in the win.
The Keuka baseball team, the No. 3 seed in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament, upset the No. 2 seeded Nittany Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg by a score of 11-8 on Friday May 1 at Chittenango High School.
The win places Keuka in the winner’s bracket and sets up a game against No. 4 Penn State-Berks who upset the top seed Cazenovia College by a score of 24-8. With the win, Keuka improves its record to 7-24 overall.
Keuka plated two runs in the top of the first and added another run in the top of the second while keeping Harrisburg scoreless for the first four innings. Harrisburg finally broke free with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. Keuka quickly answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to push Keuka’s lead to 6-1. Harrisburg clawed back into the game with two runs in the bottom of both the seventh and eighth innings. The Storm plated five more runs in the top of the ninth while Harrisburg responded with three in the bottom half of the inning.
Junior pitcher Kyle Sherin (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) pitched a sensational game while allowing just two earned runs in seven strong innings. Sherin struck out six. Sophomore David Janiszeski (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) pitched the final two innings, striking out two, while picking up his third save of the season.
Junior Ted Black (Turin, N.Y./South Lewis) paced Keuka’s offense which totaled 12 hits and 11 runs. Black batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a stolen base. Classmate Craig Pittinger (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while slugging a home run and a double.
Senior Ed Schoeneck (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs as sophomore Matt Dunn (Walden, N.Y./Chapel Field) and freshman Pete Venuti (Solvay, N.Y./Solvay) each drove in a pair of runs.
