Softball Mercy Rules Fisher in 10-2 Rout in NCAA Game

Sophomore Sarah Fredricks batted 2-for-3 while clubbing her 11th home run.
The Keuka softball team kicked off its 2009 NCAA Tournament exactly how it wanted to with a 10-2 thumping of St. John Fisher College. The regional is being played at Ithaca College on its Kostrinsky Field.
The No. 6 Storm (24-6) out-hit the No. 3 Fisher 12-4 while mercy ruling the Cardinals (30-11) after five innings of play.
Keuka got things started in the top of the second inning as sophomore Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) singled up the middle to lead off. Sophomore Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) was then hit by a pitch and was followed by a sac bunt by senior Stacy Schreiner (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron). Junior Jessica VanScoter (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) then grounded back to the pitcher who threw wildly to home, allowing both Fredricks and Engelbert to score. Senior Lindsay Humbertsone (Perry, N.Y./Perry) then drove a base hit back up the middle to score VanScoter and make it a 3-0 game.
Keuka tacked on five more runs in the top of the third on five hits including an RBI triple by freshman Sara James (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) and a two-RBI double by sophomore Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C. W. Baker). Humberstone and Engelbert also drove in runs with singles.
Fisher was finally able to get something going in the bottom half of the third, scoring both of its runs and clubbing three of its four hits.
Keukaquickly answered right back in the top of the fourth as James singled and was followed by a mammoth home run to center field by Fredricks. The round tripper was Fredricks 11th on the season.
Fisher would go scoreless in the next two innings causing a stop to the game after five innings of play.
Senior Kasie Davis (Johnsburg, N.Y./Johnsburg) picked up the win while tossing four innings and striking out two. Sophomore Kate Kraus (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) pitched a scoreless fifth while striking out the side.
Fredricks finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while James batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Humberstone and sophomore Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) each clubbed two hits a piece.
Keuka will now play against the No. 2 seeded Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester on Friday, May 8 beginning at noon.
