The Keuka men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season while evening its overall record at 1-1 with a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Panthers of Pitt-Bradford on Sept. 5.  Pitt-Bradford slips to 0-2 overall.

Keuka did all of its scoring in the opening half while playing superb defense all 90 minutes.  Keuka out-shot Pitt-Bradford 23-19 but only five of the Panthers shots were on goal.

Junior forward Jack Reece (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) got the Storm started with his first goal of the season in the 13th minute (12:40).  After a failed pass to a teammate, Reece gathered the ball, dribbled around a defender and blasted the game-winner.

The Storm’s second goal came after a foul from the Panthers set up junior defender Brian Cunliffe (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) with a free kick.  Cunliffe served the ball perfectly in front of the goal where rookie Nate Smith (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) was waiting for a header.  The freshman did not waste the opportunity to score his first career goal as he headed it into the back of the net with 31:12 left on the clock.

Senior Mike Meskill (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) played all 90 minutes in goal to pick up his first shutout of the year.  The shutout is Meskill’s 20th of his career, making him the all-time leader in Keuka’s annals.  He finished with five saves.  Pitt-Bradford’s A.J. Smigielski stopped seven shots in goal.

Keuka will next play host to the Spartans of D’Youville College this Wednesday, Sept. 9 beginning at 7 pm.
