Volleyball Goes 1-3 at D’Youville Invite; McHale Named to All-Tourney Team

Senior Holly McHale was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Keuka volleyball team won its first of four games at the D’Youville College Invitational but then dropped its next three to finish 1-3 on the weekend. Medaille College went 4-0 to win the invite while host D’Youville went 3-1 to finish second. Keuka now sits at 1-4 overall.
Keuka started with a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, & 25-16) win over Hilbert College on Friday before losing a close 3-2 decision to SUNY Morrisville (18-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19, & 13-15). On Saturday, Keuka took both opponents to five sets but lost both 3-2. Medaille College defeated Keuka (19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-20, & 10-15) while D’Youville won (15-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, & 8-15).
Senior Holly McHale (Carthage, N.Y./Jefferson CC) was named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing the weekend with 35 kills, four aces, and 43 digs.
Against Hilbert, the Storm crushed 40 kills with junior Raelle Naegely (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) and McHale accounting for 20 of them. Naegely ended with 11 kills and 10 digs while sporting a .409 kill percentage. McHale added nine kills and a team-high 12 digs. Rookie setter Demi Kauppinen (Portville, N.Y./Portville) dished off 15 assists.
Versus SUNY Morrisville, freshman Brittany Smyder (Avon, N.Y./Avon) led the offense with 10 kills and two aces. Junior Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) chipped in with nine kills and a .643 kill percentage. Kauppinen again led with 18 assists.
On day two against Medaille, McHale led with nine kills and 13 digs with Naegely collecting eight kills. Senior Jessica Volz (Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) added 10 digs with Kauppinen passing out 16 assists. Smyder served up a team-high four aces.
Against the host Spartans, Keuka finished with just a .134 attack percentage and only 38 kills in five sets. McHale again led with 10 kills and 12 digs as Fredricks tallied eight kills. Volz dug 12 balls and junior setter Katy Geers (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) passed out 16 assists.
Keuka will next play in the Colorado College Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12. The Storm will start with a game against McMurry University beginning at 11 am.
