November 10, 2009
Senior women’s soccer star Kelly Josephson (Jamestown, N.Y./Maple Grove) and senior volleyball sensation Holly McHale (Carthage, N.Y./Jefferson CC) both were selected as Keuka College Athletes of the Week after there performances in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament this past week.
Josephson, the Storm’s top defender, helped guide Keuka to the Tournament finals and then a berth into the NCAA Tournament for a second year in a row. Josephson, the 2008 NEAC Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, helped limit Wells College to just one shot in a 6-0 win in the Storm’s first round game. In the Storm’s semifinal game against SUNYIT, Keuka was down 1-0 with just 1:08 remaining in the game, when Josephson netted her first goal of the season. Keuka went on to win 2-1 in overtime. Josephson and the rest of the Storm’s ”D” limited SUNYIT to just six shots. The Storm would fall 1-0 in overtime in the finals but again Josephson helped shutout the 16-2 Nittany Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg for 99 straight minutes. Josephson was selected to the All-NEAC first team for her performance this season.
McHale, a 5-10 outside hitter, helped guide Keuka to a 2-2 showing at the NEAC Tournament. McHale and the Storm upset top-seeded SUNY Morrisville (3-0) before falling to the University of Dallas (1-3). Keuka then beat Penn State-Berks (3-1) before losing to SUNYIT (2-3). McHale led Keuka with 43 kills and 59 digs while adding eight blocks. She had 11, 5, 17, and 10 kills in the four matches while posting double digits in digs in all four matches. For the season, McHale led Keuka with 252 kills and 381 digs.
