Schrock’s 28 Points Not Enough as Storm Drop Opener to Herons

The Keuka women’s basketball team was within single digits with under a minute remaining but eventually lost its season opener to the Herons of William Smith College by a score of 81-68 on the road Sunday.

The game was also William Smith’s season opener as they begin its 2009-10 season 1-0.

Trailing by as many as 21 points in the second half, Keuka was able to fight its way back into the game and get within eight points, three different times.  Forced to foul at the end, the Storm were unable to complete its comeback.  Keuka outscored William Smith 41-37 in the second half.

The Storm trailed 44-27 after the first half of play, thanks to 49% shooting (16-for-33) by the Herons.  Keuka shot 30% (11-for-37) in the opening half and 35% (14-for-40) in the second half.  The Storm’s defense caused William Smith to commit 24 turnovers in the game while both teams finished with 43 rebounds.

Junior Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) led all scorers with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-25 shooting.  Schrock netted three 3-pointers.  Classmate Nicki Zahn (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) added 13 points, six rebounds, and a team-high two assists. 

Junior forward Nadia Madmoune (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) was the third Storm player in double figures as she tallied 11 points to go with six boards.  Rookie Mariah Mouzon (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Elmira Free Acad.) led all Keuka players with eight rebounds.

William Smith had four players with 14 or more points led by Ashlinn Barber’s 20.

Keuka will next play at Alfred University this Tuesday, Nov. 17 beginning at 6 pm.
