Basketball Guards Nab Athlete of the Week Honors

Senior Alex Coleman (Elmira, N.Y./Southside) and junior Nicki Zahn (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) were selected as Keuka College Athletes of the Week after guiding there teams to victories over the week ending Dec. 12.

Coleman, an All-NEAC third team guard a year ago, led the Storm to a 69-56 win over SUNY Morrsiville.  He finished just two assists shy of a triple-double as he poured in 16 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.  Coleman went 7-for-13 from the floor while his eight assists contributed to the team passing out 20 dimes, a season-high.  For the season, he is second on the team in scoring at 14.5 points a game.

Zahn, a guard and the team’s second leading scorer (8.2), led the Storm to a 60-38 win over the Mustangs of SUNY Morrisville.  Zahn led all Keuka scorers with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.  She also led with three assists while finishing second on team with five rebounds.  Zahn went 1-for-2 from behind the arc and 2-for-3 from the free throw line.  She currently leads the team in 3-point percentage (.438) and is second on the team with seven trifecta’s.

The Keuka men’s basketball team never trailed in a 69-56 win over the Mustangs of SUNY Morrisville at the Weed Physical Arts Center on Wednesday.

The Storm win for the fourth time in its last five games as they improve to 4-3 overall.  Morrisville falls 1-5 on the season.

Keuka shot at a 52 percent clip (13-for-25) in the opening half to build a 34-22 halftime lead.  The Storm edged the Mustangs in scoring in the second half (35-34).  For the game, Keuka shot 47% (27-for-57) while Morrisville struggled to a 36% clip (22-for-61).  Keuka was unselfish with the ball all game as they finished with a season-high 20 assists while having four players score in double figures. The Keuka College women’s basketball team won its fourth game in a row as they knocked off the visiting Mustangs of SUNY Morrisville by a score of 60-38 at the Weed Physical Arts Center on Wednesday.

The Storm used scoring from 13 different players as they improve to 4-2 on the season.  Morrisville slips to 1-7 overall.

Keuka jumped out to a 19-0 lead and never looked back as they held a 39-10 halftime lead.  Morrisville outscored Keuka 28-21 in the second half but the damage was already done in the opening half.  Keuka shot 48% (25-for-52) from the floor while holding the Mustangs to just 24% (14-for-58).  The Storm’s defense caused 29 Mustangs turnovers leading to 15 Keuka steals.  The Storm edged Morrisville in rebounds (43-34). Hoop Stars Garner Athlete of the Week Honors

Keuka College basketball stars Calvin Logins (Newark, N.Y./Lyons) and Mariah Mouzon (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Elmira Free Acad.) enjoyed solid weeks on the basketball court as they were named Keuka College Athletes of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5.

Logins, the men’s hoops leading scorer, led Keuka to a 1-1 week while scoring 48 points (24.0) and grabbing 23 rebounds (11.5).  Against Penn State-Berks, Logins went off for a career-high 31 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the floor and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.  He also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to pick up the double-double.  He followed that up with a 17-point, 9-rebound performance in Keuka’s 68-65 win over Penn State-Abington.  He shot 7-for-9 from the floor.

Mouzon, a rookie forward, led Keuka to a 2-0 week while scoring 23 points (11.5) and grabbing 15 rebounds (7.5).  She rolled off a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 68-65 win over Penn State-Berks.  She followed that up with a team-high 11 points and five boards in a 74-54 win over Penn State-Abington.  She also added three assists and one block.

TeddyTugglesThe Keuka College men’s basketball team won for the third time in its last four games as they knocked off the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Abington 68-65 on the road Sunday.

Keuka improves to 3-3 overall while the Nittany Lions slip to 1-5 on the season.

Both squads shot well from the floor all game, especially in the opening half with the Storm hitting 13-of-24 shots (54%) and the Nittany Lions connecting on 13-of-28 shots (46%).  Keuka held a one-point lead (35-34) at intermission.  The Storm never led by more than eight points in the second half but they also only trailed once and that was at the beginning of the second half (19:32).

For the game, Keuka shot 51% (24-for-47) while Abington shot 43% (26-for-60).  Abington won the battle of the boards (30-to-27) while both teams dished off 11 assists. Read more

The women’s basketball team picked up its third straight win in a 74-54 blowout win over Penn State-Abington on Sunday.  Keuka had 14 of its 15 players score while improving to 3-2 on the year.  The Nittany Lions had just six players score in the game as they fall to 1-3 overall.

Keuka opened the game on fire as they shot 46% (13-for-28) from the floor while holding Abington to 33% (9-for-27) as Keuka held a 36-22 lead at the break.   The Storm didn’t cool off much in the second half connecting on 13 more field goals.  For the game, Keuka shot 43% while Abington shot 35%.  The Storm hit 19 free throws to just nine for the Nittany Lions.

Keuka had seven players score at least six points with rookie Mariah Mouzon (Elmira heights, N.Y./Elmira Free Acad.) leading the way with 11.  Fellow freshman Latasha Santana (Rochester, N.Y./East) added nine points while junior Jessica Fink (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) chipped in eight points.
