Storm Survive in Overtime Against St. Elizabeth

The Keuka College women’s basketball team survived an overtime scare from the host Screaming Eagles of the College of St. Elizabeth as the Storm won 67-64 on Wednesday.

Keuka wins its sixth straight game and now have five and six-game winning streaks on the year as they improve to 11-5.  St. Elizabeth falls to 10-10 overall.

Despite going to overtime, the Storm never trailed in the contest.  Keuka took advantage of strong free throw shooting in the extra frame (8-for-9) as they outscored St. Elizabeth 14-11 in overtime.

Keuka jumped out to a huge lead early as they were up by as many 13 points in the first half.  Holding a 10-point (29-19) halftime lead, Keuka was up nine points (52-43) with just 3:28 remaining in the game.  The Storm however would score just one more point while the Screaming Eagles would net 10 unanswered points.  Capped off by a half court 3-pointer by Maesoon Deeb as time expired to send the game to overtime.

Both teams finished with 23 field goals with Keuka shooting 34% (23-for-67) and St. Elizabeth 38% (23-for-60).  The two teams each hit six 3-pointers as well while Keuka netted three more free throws (15-12).   The Storm grabbed 39 rebounds to St. Elizabeth’s 38.

Rookie Mariah Mouzon (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) led Keuka with a game-high 20 points while going 8-for-11 from the floor.  Mouzon also added 10 boards to notch her third double-double of the season. 

Junior guards Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) and Jessica Fink (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) each netted 12 points a piece while each went 4-for-14 from the floor.  Classmate Nadia Madmoune (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) added a game-high 12 rebounds while senior Melissa Thurston (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) added eight points and four steals.

St. Elizabeth was led by Sabrina Jarmolinski’s 18 points.  Deeb and Sarah Kozlowski  both added double-doubles.

Keuka will next play at SUNY Cobleskill this Saturday, Feb. 6 beginning at 1 pm.
