Storm Hold Top NEAC Team to 40 Points in Big Win

In a battle of the top two teams in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), it was the Keuka women’s basketball team that punished the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill by a score of 56-40 at Keuka on Wednesday.

Keuka improves to 15-7 overall with the win while Cobleskill, who was held to a season-low 40 points, slips to 15-7 on the year.

Both teams struggled from the floor as they combined for just 15 first half field goals while Cobleskill held a two-point (21-19) halftime lead.

The Storm’s defense completely shut down the Fighting Tigers offense in the second half as they held them to just 19 points and only 23% (6-for-26) shooting.  Keuka caught fire from behind the arc, hitting 6-of-12 from long range to put up 37 second half points.  For the game, Keuka shot 31% (18-for-58) while Cobleskill went 14-for-53 (26%).  The Storm held a 7-rebound advantage (46-39).

Junior Jessica Fink (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) hit four of the Storm’s seven 3-pointers as she went 4-for-8 from behind the arc.  Fink finished with a game-high 16 points.  Classmate Brittany Schrock (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) added 14 points and three steals.

Senior Melissa Thurston (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds while junior Nadia Madmoune (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Acad.) and rookie Mariah Mouzon (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) each tallied six points and 10 rebounds.

Kaitlin Myers led SUNY Cobleskill with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks.

Keuka will next play at Penn State-Harrisburg this Saturday, Feb. 20 beginning at 1 pm.
