Trailing 6-5 at the half, Keuka out-scored the Shenandoah University Hornets 6-2 in the second half to escape with an 11-8 win on the road in its season opener on Saturday.

The Hornets (0-3) tallied the game’s first three goals, including the only two scores in the first period.  Keuka answered with four straight goals in the first three minutes of the second period to take a 4-3 lead.  Shenandoah rallied with three more goals to retake the lead at 6-4.  Keuka’s Mark Butto (Rochester, N.Y./Schroeder) scored an unassisted goal with 29 seconds remaining in the half to cut the Hornets lead to one.

Goals by junior David Miller (East Syracuse, N.Y./ESM) and Butto gave Keuka a 7-6 lead early in the third period.  Shenandoah tied it with 6:25 remaining in the third.  Freshman Chris Redington (Tully, N.Y./Tully) gave Keuka the lead back for good with a goal at the 4:22 mark.

The Storm were much more efficient with its shots as they were out-shot 46-28.  Junior goalie Brett Leonard (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) was another big reason why the Hornets did not score that much despite ripping 46 shots.  Leonard finished with 20 saves while allowing just the eight goals in 60 minutes of action.  The Hornets goalie stopped just five shots while allowing 11 goals.  Shenandoah won the face-off battle (14-7).

Butto led the Storm offense, tallying four goals and an assist in his first-ever collegiate game.  Fellow rookies Redington, three goals, and Mike Crumlish (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton), three assists, also played huge first games for Keuka.

Junior Stephen Ferguson (Syrcause, N.Y./Westhill) added two goals and an assist while Miller had a goal and an assist.  Rookie Anthony Jones (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) netted his first collegiate goal.  Sophomore Ben Ternosky (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette) led Keuka with four ground balls and three won face-offs.

Keuka will next play at R.I.T. this Saturday, March 13 beginning at 1 pm.
