Baseball Drops Season Openers to RIT

Senior Ted Black batted 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
The Keuka baseball team lost its season opening double header to the Tigers of R.I.T. by scores of 7-1 and 5-4 on Friday. The Tigers improve to 4-5 on the year.
In game one, the Storm ripped five hits but stranded eight runners as they plated just one runner. R.I.T. scored runs in the first and third innings and then three more in the fourth to make it a 5-0 lead. Keuka answered with its lone run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Mike Hutchings (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) led off with a double and was brought home by senior Simon Mills’ (Boonville, N.Y./Adirondack) triple. Mills finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Senior Kyle Sherin (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) pitched five innings while allowing four earned and striking out three in the loss.
In game two, Keuka jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three trips to the plate. The Storm plated two runs off a double by senior Ted Black (Turin, N.Y./South Lewis) in the first inning. Black added an RBI single in the third before fellow senior Rob Crowley (Attica, N.Y./Attica) was beaned with the bases loaded to make it a 4-0 game.
RIT answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth to tie the game. After Keuka came close to scoring a run in the top of the seventh, the Tigers plated the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. Black went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Hutchings scored twice. Sophomore Nick Ventura (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) batted 2-for-3.
Junior Jason Kirkum (Bason, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) pitched a complete game for the Storm while striking out eight Tigers.
Keuka will next play at No. 20 SUNY Cortland this Sunday, March 28 beginning at 2 pm.
