Men’s Lax Fall to Medaille in NEAC Tourney

Freshman Anthony Jones had two goals and two assists.
The Keuka men’s lacrosse team lost its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) semifinal game against the No. 2 seeded Mavericks of Medaille College on Saturday. The No. 3 Storm fell 12-10. Keuka defeated Medaille 17-4 in last season’s Tournament championship. The Storm finish with a 5-9 overall record while Medaille improves to 8-6.
The Mavericks put the pressure on the Storm right away by scoring four of the game’s first five goals. Keuka answered by tallying four of the next six goals to get back within one (6-5) at the half. The Mavericks added three goals in the third while holding the Storm to just one. Keuka netted four fourth period goals but the Mavericks stayed consistent with three more goals to win by two.
Keuka had three more shots (41-38) but Medaille dominated the face-offs (18-8). The Mavericks had 44 ground balls while the Storm picked up 37. Read more

Baseball Splits with Oswego in Season Finale
April 29, 2010
Sophomore Ben Przepiora batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Keuka College baseball team split with the visiting Lakers of SUNY Oswego in its last two games of the 2010 season on Thursday. The Storm won game one 8-6 and lost the second game 14-7. Keuka finishes with a 7-18 overall record while Oswego improves to 17-13.
In the first game, Keuka scored seven runs, all with two outs. Up 7-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, senior Ted Black (Turin, N.Y./South Lewis) belted a solo home run to make it 8-4. The Lakers scored two in the top of the seventh but the damage was done.
Junior Jason Kirkum (Bason, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) tossed his fifth complete game while picking up his second win of the season. He allowed just four earned and struck out seven. Read more

Kirkum and McDonald Star on the Diamond; Named Athletes of the Week

Junior baseball player Jason Kirkum (Bason, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and freshman softball player Montana McDonald (Romulus, N.Y./Romulus) were selected as Keuka College Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 24.
Kirkum, a pitcher/designated hitter, led the Storm to a 4-5 week overall and a 4-4 week in conference action. On the mound he made two starts, going the distance each time, and collecting 15 strikeouts in just 13 innings pitched. He went 1-1 overall and had a 6.23 ERA while holding hitters to a .263 batting average. At the plate, he led the Storm’s offense with a .429 batting average (9-for-21) while ripping a double, knocking in four runs, and scoring four of his own. He also walked four times to post a team-high .520 on-base percentage.
McDonald, a shortstop, had a huge week batting .600 (9-for-15) while leading the Storm to a 6-0 record. She drove in 14 runs in just six games while scoring three of her own. She belted a double, a triple, and her first career home run, while sporting a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .647 on-base percentage. In the field she had a team-high eight assists to go with four putouts.
Five Women’s Lax Players Named to All-Conference Teams

The Keuka College women’s lacrosse team, fresh off of winning its second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament championship, had five players recognized by the conference on its first and second All-Conference teams.
Highlighting the five players was junior attacker Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) who was a first team selection as well as the Tournament MVP for the second straight year. Shafer currently has 72 goals and 12 assists for 84 points. Her goals and points total are both single-season records at Keuka. She also leads the team with three game-winning goals and 36 draw controls.
Joining Shafer on the All-NEAC first team was classmate and midfielder Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton). Murray, a second team selection last season, is third on the team in scoring with 26 goals, nine assists, and 35 points. She has a team-high 84 ground balls, a school record. Read more
Keuka Softball Loves Lucy

Team dons pink warm-up shirts to support coach’s mom who is battling breast cancer.
While Keuka College’s colors are green and gold, its softball team warms up in pink.
The idea for the pink shirts came after Head Coach Jaime Burke’s mother, Lucy, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The team got the idea and had the shirts made on its own,” said Burke. “When I met with the team prior to the season in February, they asked me if they could do something for my mom. She had just found out in January that she had breast cancer. I said ‘sure, it was fine with me.’”
“The shirts have ‘Keuka Softball’ on the front, ‘I Love Lucy’ on the back, our numbers on one sleeve, and the breast cancer symbol on the other sleeve,” said senior Jessica VanScoter, who coordinated the project. Read more
