Women’s Tennis Defeats Cobleskill to Secure Spot in Tournament

In a must win match against the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday, the Storm won 6-3 to secure its place in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament.

Keuka improves to 5-5 overall and 5-2 in conference action while Cobleskill falls to 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the NEAC.

The Storm started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches.  Junior Megan McGowan (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) and senior Alison Liberty (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood) won in the top flight by a score of 8-3 while senior Jennifer Heinrich (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and sophomore Helen Helmer (Whitesboro, N.Y./Notre Dame) lost a close match 9-8 in the second flight.  Rookies Brin Benjamin (Carlisle, Pa/Carlisle) and Kara Dewitt (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) won the third flight by default.

In singles, McGowan won the top flight 6-3, 6-1 while Heinrich won the fourth flight 6-4, 6-3.  Benjamin took the fifth flight 6-4, 6-3 and Dewitt won the sixth flight by default.

The Storm will now play in the NEAC Tournament this Thursday and Friday, April 22-23 at the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa.  Keuka, the No. 2 seed, will take on No. 3 Wells College beginning at 9 am.
