Strong Pitching Leads Keuka to Split with Abington

The Keuka baseball team allowed only two earned runs in 14 innings of play as they split with the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State-Abington on Friday.  Keuka dropped game one 2-1 and won game two 9-2.  The Storm are now 5-16 overall and 3-7 in the conference while Abington is 15-14 overall and 6-6 in the NEAC.

In game one, both teams scored a run in the first inning and then went scoreless for the next five innings.  Abington scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.  Senior Kyle Sherin (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) took the loss despite allowing just six hits and striking out five.  Senior Neil Halvorsen (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) drove in Keuka’s only run.

The second game belonged to sophomore Anthony Zaia (Phoenix, N.Y./Phoenix) who tossed a complete game while getting 14 ground outs and not allowing any earned runs.  The win is Zaia’s first of his career.  Keuka ripped 11 hits in the game.

Junior Jason Kirkum (Bason, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) led the bats going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Junior Matt Dunn (Walden, N.Y./Chapel Field) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Nick Ventura (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Keuka will next play host to Penn State-Berks this Saturday, April 24 beginning at 1 pm.
