McGowan & Liberty Earn All-NEAC First Team Honors

The Keuka College women’s tennis team, having lost the NEAC Championship match by one point, played in the individual portion of the championship the next day.  The Storm placed two on the All-NEAC  first team, one on the second team, and two on the third team. 

Junior Megan McGowan (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia), last year’s NEAC Player of the Year, was the #1 seed and won her first match in the top flight of singles by a score of 6-3, 6-3.  McGowan was then upset by the #2 seed from Wilson College by a score of 4-6, 2-6.  McGowan was named to the All-NEAC second team for singles.

In the flight No. 2 of singles, senior Alison Liberty (Sourth Berwick, ME/Marshwood) was the #2 seed.  She was upset by the #3 seed from Wilson (0-6, 2-6) but regrouped to take the next match against the #4 seed from Penn State-Harrisburg (6-7, 6-1, 6-4).  Liberty was named to the All-NEAC third team in the second flight of singles.

In the fourth flight, #4 seed senior Jennifer Heinrich (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) lost (6-2, 2-6, 2-6) and then fell (6-3, 3-6, 3-6) in the consolation match.

In the fifth flight, rookie Brin Benjamin (Carlisle, Pa/Carlisle) was the #4 seed.  She fell (4-6, 2-6) before winning the consolation match (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) to earn a spot on the All-NEAC third team in the fifth flight of singles.

In the sixth flight, freshman Kara Dewitt (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) lost both of her matches as the #4 seed.  She fell (3-6, 6-1, 4-6) and then (6-2, 3-6, 0-6).

In doubles, McGowan and Liberty were the #2 seed and won 8-4 in its first match. The pair then upset the #1 seed from Wilson College (9-8) to earna  spot on the All-NEAC first team.

In the second flight, Heinrich and sophomore Helen Helmer (Whitesboro, N.Y./Notre Dame) were the #2 seed but lost both of its matches (0-8) and (5-8).

Benjamin and Dewitt (#4 seed) also fell in both of there matches by scores of (2-8) and (5-8).
