Storm Celebrate With Awards Ceremony

May 25, 2010

The 2009-10 Synchronized Swimming Team.

Synchronized swimming team members from left: Sarah Silverman, Shannon O'Donnell, Courtney Karolinko, and Tracy Ringel.

The annual Keuka College athletics award ceremony was held in the Weed Physical Arts Center Saturday, May 22 to honor and recognize all of the accomplishments of the Storm’s 15 intercollegiate teams and players.

Among the teams recognized was synchronized swimming, which competed its final season in 2009-10.

Keuka College had long been among the country’s synchronized swimming elite, cracking the top 5 on some occasions and regularly finishing in the top 6 or 7 at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

So, the Storm’s 11th place finish at the 2010 championships might seem like a disappointment.

But when you take into consideration the adversity faced by the team in 2009-10, its showing at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University was nothing short of remarkable. Read more

Late Comeback Not Enough as Softball’s Season Ends

Freshman Brittany Smyder was 3-for-3 at the plate on the day.

Freshman Brittany Smyder was 3-for-3 at the plate on the day.

After being held to just one hit through the first five innings of play and trailing 10-0, Keuka mounted a nine-run comeback over the next two innings but couldn’t overtake the Monarchs of King’s College.  The Storm fell 12-9 in its second game of the NCAA Tournament at Ithaca College and was eliminated from the Tournament.

The Storm finish its very successful 2010 season with a 23-10 overall record while King’s advances to the third day of the Regional and now stand at 23-17.

King’s jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added three more runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.  Meanwhile, Keuka had managed just one hit and was three outs away from losing the game.  Keuka answered by scoring six runs in the sixth to send the game to the seventh inning.  The Monarchs added two more runs in the seventh to go up 12-6.  The Storm plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning and left the bases loaded when the game ended. The Keuka softball team fell to the No. 6 ranked Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland by a score of 7-1 in its first game of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.  The game was the first game in the regional being played at Ithaca College.

The Storm will now play the loser of the Alfred University/King’s College game this Friday, May 14 beginning at 10 am.  Keuka slips to 23-9 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to 39-6.

The Storm got off to a great start in the top of the first, as junior lead-off hitter Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) lined a base hit to left field and then stole her 34th base of the season.  Sophomore Sara James (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) then crushed a double off the left field wall to score Bilbow with the game’s first run. Tournament MVP’s Named Athletes of the Week

May 4, 2010

The Keuka College women’s lacrosse and softball teams both won Tournament championships this past week and the Tournament MVP’s, freshman Allison Richter Hume, N.Y./Fillmore) and junior Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge), were selected as Athletes of the Week for there performances.

Richter, the NEAC Pitcher of the Year, led Keuka to three straight NEAC Tournament wins and the teams fourth straight tournament title while being named the NEAC Tournament MVP.  Richter was 3-0 while tossing two complete games and one shutout.  She allowed only one earned run in 18.1 innings for a 0.38 ERA.  Richter struck out 12 batters.  Before the Tournament, Richter picked up both wins against SUNYIT, including a shutout, while not allowing a run to finish the week 5-0 with 0.24 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

Shafer, already named the NEAC Tournament MVP the previous week, helped Keuka win the North Atlantic Championship (NAC) while being named the game’s MVP.  Shafer had seven goals and two assists while scoring the game-winning goal with just 3:21 left to beat Husson University (11-2-1) by a score of 16-15.  Shafer, a first team All-NEAC selection this season, finished the season with a school record 79 goals and 93 points.  Shafer was also selected as the Female RACA Athlete of the Week as well.

Thad Phillips to Direct Storm Men’s Hoop Program

May 4, 2010

Thad Phillips

Thad Phillips

Keuka College has selected Thad Phillips, assistant coach at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., to be its new head men’s basketball coach.

Phillips replaces Tom Flood, who announced his retirement in March.

“We felt Thad was a perfect fit for Keuka College,” said Athletic Director Dave Sweet. “As a successful NCAA Division III student-athlete and coach, he knows the dedication and work ethic it takes to compete on this level and understands the role that the term ‘student’ means in student-athlete.”

Phillips has served as assistant men’s basketball coach and associate coordinator of recreation services at Rhodes since 2007. He was an assistant basketball and women’s golf coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga., in 2006-07 and a graduate assistant at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisc., from 2004-06. From 2001-04 he served as assistant coach/head freshman coach at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. Read more
