Women’s Lax Wins NAC Championship

Fresh off of winning the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament by one goal, the Keuka women’s lacrosse team won the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship by one goal (16-15) over Husson University on Saturday. The game was played at Green Mountain College in Vermont. The Storm finish the 2010 season with a 10-5 overall record while Husson ends at 11-2-1.
The Storm had a great start as they scored nine of the first ten goals to begin the game. Husson chipped away and got to within 13-8 at the half. The Eagles scored five straight goals to tie it at 14-14 with 16:12 remaining in the second half. After a Keuka score with 4:51 left, the eagles tied it again just 59 seconds later. Junior Brandy Shafer (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) would net the game-winner with 3:21 remaining as neither team would score again.
The Storm were actually out-shot by 20 (45-25) but received a great game from its rookie goalie Molly Hogan (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads). Hogan stopped 18 shots in goal while allowing 15 goals. She was selected to the All-Tournament team for her performance. The Eagles also had more ground balls (35-17) and draw controls (17-16).
Shafer finished with a game-high seven goals to go with two assists while being named the game’s MVP. She was also the NEAC Tournament MVP and finished the season with an incredible 79 goals, 14 assists, and 93 points.
Joining Hogan and Shafer on the All-Tournament team was senior Trista Partridge (Bath, N.Y./Haverling), junior Brittany Murray (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton), and rookie Sarah Capek (Elmira, N.Y./Horseheads).
Junior Laura Dougherty (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) had three goals and an assist while Murray had two goals and one helper. Partridge netted two goals while junior Courtney Potochniak (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) had a goal and two assists.
