The Keuka softball team fell to the No. 6 ranked Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland by a score of 7-1 in its first game of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.  The game was the first game in the regional being played at Ithaca College.

The Storm will now play the loser of the Alfred University/King’s College game this Friday, May 14 beginning at 10 am.  Keuka slips to 23-9 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to 39-6.

The Storm got off to a great start in the top of the first, as junior lead-off hitter Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) lined a base hit to left field and then stole her 34th base of the season.  Sophomore Sara James (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) then crushed a double off the left field wall to score Bilbow with the game’s first run.

Unfortunately for the Storm that would be its only two hits in the game as Cortland’s ace, Katie Finch, settled down and won her 26th game of the season.

The Red Dragons would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead and then added two runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and another run in the fifth.  Cortland finished with 11 hits on the day.

Rookie pitcher Allison Richter (Hume, N.Y./Fillmore) tossed a complete game allowing six earned and striking out two.  Bilbow and James each finished 1-for-2 on the day.
