Late Comeback Not Enough as Softball’s Season Ends

Freshman Brittany Smyder was 3-for-3 at the plate on the day.
After being held to just one hit through the first five innings of play and trailing 10-0, Keuka mounted a nine-run comeback over the next two innings but couldn’t overtake the Monarchs of King’s College. The Storm fell 12-9 in its second game of the NCAA Tournament at Ithaca College and was eliminated from the Tournament.
The Storm finish its very successful 2010 season with a 23-10 overall record while King’s advances to the third day of the Regional and now stand at 23-17.
King’s jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added three more runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. Meanwhile, Keuka had managed just one hit and was three outs away from losing the game. Keuka answered by scoring six runs in the sixth to send the game to the seventh inning. The Monarchs added two more runs in the seventh to go up 12-6. The Storm plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning and left the bases loaded when the game ended.
Keuka finished with eight hits while allowing 16. Rookie Brittany Smyder (Avon, N.Y./Avon) went 3-for-3 to lead the Storm’s offense. Fellow freshman Terin Brown (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) batted 1-for-3 with four RBIs including a bases clearing double. Junior Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while sophomore Sara James (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) was 0-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Freshman Allison Richter (Hume, N.Y./Fillmore) suffered the loss while giving up eight earned in 5.1 innings and striking out one. Junior Cherie Smith (Canastota, N.Y./Mohawk Valley CC) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two earned and striking out three batters.
