Keuka College lacrosse standout Jennifer Bush, a senior-to-be and education major from Endwell, is the recipient of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s (IWLCA) Division III Community Awareness Award.
The award recognizes student-athletes who have contributed significantly to their community in a given year, given their time and energy to support and develop athlete-community relations, and distinguished themselves from their peers.
Bush and the three other student advocates in the Center for Experiential Learning’s Community Service Resource Center design a “Drive of the Month” to benefit one or more non-profit organizations or individuals in need.
For example, last September, the Center hosted Operation Crayon to collect school supplies for the Yates County American Red Cross’s supply closet. A necessity drive followed in October, also benefitting the supply closet. Sixty-seven personal hygiene and other items were donated.
The annual Angel Tree Project served as December’s drive, which was co-sponsored by the Rotaract Club. The Child and Family Resource Center in Penn Yan supplied the names of 31 children in need. Members of the Keuka College community selected names from the Angel Tree, bought presents for the children, and supplied wrapping paper.
Other drives conducted in 2009-10 benefited the American Cancer Society, Milly’s Pantry (which provides food for children and families) in Penn Yan, children in local Head Start classes (Easter baskets), Yates County Humane Society, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
During her senior year at Maine-Endwell High School, Bush was named Keuka College’s Experiential Learner of the Year. Keuka, the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning, established the program to honor high school students whose commitment to experiential, hands-on learning has made a difference in their communities.
Bush had another strong season on the field for the Keuka lacrosse team. The attacker scored 23 goals and assisted on 13 others for 36 points, helping the Storm to a 10-5 record, the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship, and the North Atlantic Conference title.
