For the fourth time in five races, freshman Lee Bottoni (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) was Keuka’s top finisher, and this time, Bottoni picked up his first career victory. Bottoni ran the 4.1 mile course in a time of 23 minutes, 1.06 seconds, more than five seconds faster than the runner-up.

Shelby Seeley, right, and the Keuka women's soccer team fell at home to Alfred University 2-0 Wednesday night.

BOXSCORE

On a rainy, soggy Wednesday night at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex, the Keuka College women’s soccer team was unable to generate a sustained offensive attack and was shut out 2-0 by the visiting Alfred University Saxons.

The game was played on a soggy field, as several torrential downpours during the pre-game warm-ups made footing on the grass field difficult for both schools. The Saxons (2-6) struck first in the 22nd minute when, following a save by senior goalie Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison), Sara Borrhello collected the rebound and scored for a 1-0 lead.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Alfred had a good look for its second goal when Rachael Williams ripped a shot from eight yards out, but Engelbert made a nice diving save to her right to preserve the one-goal game.

The two teams combined to play the next 43 minutes scoreless following Borrhello’s goal, but unfortunately for the Storm (2-4-1), when the next goal occurred it was a Saxon who scored. Off a well-placed Alfred corner kick, Molly Finnerty played a ball in front of net to AnnMarie Ventura, who slid her shot past a diving Engelbert for a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute.

The Storm was unable to get its attack on track and finished with just two shots, compared to 22 for the Saxons. Engelbert finished with eight saves in her third consecutive start in goal for Keuka.

Keuka hits the road for a 3 p.m. NEAC clash against Cazenovia College Saturday before returning home for a 6 p.m. non-conference clash with SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday night, Oct. 5.

Junior Brittany Smyder had 7 kills, 5 blocks and 4 service aces as Keuka swept Hilbert in three sets Monday night.

BOXSCORE

The Keuka College women’s volleyball team picked up its second straight win heading into this weekend’s critical North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover matches as the Storm dispatched of host Hilbert College in three sets Monday night.

Junior middle hitter Brittany Smyder (Avon, NY/Avon) had 7 kills on a .353 hitting percentage and also added 4 service aces and 5 blocks as Keuka (7-3) rolled past Hilbert 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22.

Sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added 15 digs, the fifth time in Keuka’s last six games that the defensive specialist has finished with double-figure digs in a match.

Sophomore Paige Golden (Kent, NY/Albion) added game-highs in digs (17) and kills (8) while freshman Devan Curtis (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) added eight kills while hitting at a .286 clip for the Storm.

Sophomore setters Amie Pizura (Prattsburgh, NY/Hammondsport) and Jill Nolan (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) had 12- and 10-assist nights, respectively, in fueling Keuka’s potent attack, which hit .182 for the match, compared to Hilbert, which hit at a .034 clip.

Keuka also had 7.5 blocks compared to just one block for the Hawks (2-7).

Keuka rallied from a five-point deficit in the first set, then stormed out to an eight-point lead in the second set and never relinquished that lead to defeat the Hawks for the third time in three matches this year.

“We are back to believing we can win even when faced with adversity,” said Ben Guiliano, Keuka’s first-year women’s volleyball coach.

“We came from five points back in set one and it was very close in set 3 before we were able to finish. … These are positive signs as we move forward.”

The Storm is off until hosting a pivotal NEAC crossover weekend inside the Weed Physical Arts Center. Keuka will host Morrisville State at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon followed by a 5 p.m. clash with SUNY Cobleskill. On Sunday, Keuka hosts SUNYIT at noon, back inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.

Burd, Engelbert Named Athletes of the Week

September 26, 2011

Junior Ron Burd (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) hadn’t recorded a soccer hat trick since his high school playing career. Senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) had never even played in a soccer game at any level until the 2011 season with the Storm.

Burd scored three times during Keuka’s 7-0 romp over Gallaudet while Engelbert posted a shutout and stopped 12 of 13 shots during her two starts in goal over the weekend for the Green and Gold. They are Keuka’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Entering Saturday’s Family Weekend home game against Gallaudet University, Burd hadn’t recorded a hat trick in a soccer game since his high school days. In fact, he wasn’t even on Keuka’s men’s soccer team during his first two years on campus, and he had been held scoreless through the first four games of the 2011 season.

That all changed rather quickly on Saturday. Burd, a crafty six-foot forward, scored three times in a span of 24 minutes and 24 seconds as the Storm routed Gallaudet 7-0 on Parents’ Day at the Jephson Community Athletic Center.

Leading 3-0, Burd began his scoring binge in the 33rd minute. Burd took on the Gallaudet keeper 1-on-1 and scored into the far portion of the goal to push the lead to 4-0. Burd tacked on two more goals in a span of 9:12 early in the second half and the rout was on as the Storm scored its most goals in a game since a 9-0 win at D’Youville College on Oct. 3, 2007.

Keuka enjoyed a 29-5 edge in shots, including a 19-2 advantage in the second half, as eight different Keuka players recorded shots on goal. Burd scored on three of his four shots on goal.

All Engelbert, who started off the year playing forward, did in her first two starts as a goalie was record a shutout and stop 12 of a possible 13 shots as the Storm went 1-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play.

Head coach Jamie Burke, wanting to get more production out of her midfield, shifted freshman Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport), the previous starting goalie, into the midfield position prior to the Gallaudet game and inserted Engelbert in goal, and the former Keuka volleyball standout did not disappoint.

Engelbert turned away all six Bison shots on Saturday as the Storm won its home opener, 3-0 over Gallaudet. Facing the always-dangerous Penn State-Harrisburg Lions on Sunday, Engelbert proved her debut wasn’t a fluke. Engelbert again made six saves, including several stops from point-blank range that kept the deficit at 1-0. For the first two starts of her goalie career, Engelbert finished with a .923 saves percentage and a 0.50 goals-against average in her 180 minutes in net.

Freshman Amanda Dickens finished in a four-way tie for seventh during the annual William Smith Golf Invitational.

Freshman Amanda Dickens (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) finished in a four-way tie for seventh place Sunday during the annual William Smith Golf Invitational, hosted by William Smith College down the road in nearby Geneva, NY.

Competing against 30 other golfers from seven other colleges, Dickens carded a cumulative two-day score of 190 to finish in a four-way tie for seventh place. Dickens’ final round score of 94 was a two stroke improvement over her first round score, and left her 11 shots shy of the winning score of 179, recorded by William Smith’s Kara Capstraw.

William Smith captured the team title with a score of 784, edging out Le Moyne (785), Susquehanna (787), Elmira (799) and Nazareth College (829).

Dickens strung together an eight-over par score of 44 on the back nine, including getting pars on three of seven holes on the back nine for the Storm.

Keuka’s women’s golf team is in its first year of existence.

Women’s Soccer Loses to Harrisburg

Brooke Lovell and the Keuka defense held Penn State-Harrisburg scoreless for 77 minutes, but still lost 1-0.

BOXSCORE

The Keuka College women’s soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Penn State-Harrisburg Lions Sunday afternoon as part of the college’s Family Weekend activities at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

The Storm (2-3-1, 2-2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) allowed only a 13th-minute goal against Harrisburg (3-2, 2-1 NEAC), but still came away empty-handed against its NEAC rivals despite holding the Lions scoreless for the game’s final 77:20.

There was some drama late in the contest, as it appeared freshman midfielder Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) broke in on goal and booted a ball into the back of the net with two minutes to play, but the referees ruled there was an offsides violation against Keuka and Swarts’ potential game-tying goal was nullified. Despite applying constant pressure the rest of the way, the Storm couldn’t net the equalizer.

After a scoreless first 12 minutes, Harrisburg struck first, scoring off a scramble in front of the Keuka goal. Tina Martino collected a loose ball right in front of the goal and pushed a shot that bounded into the back of the net in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 through the rest of the half. Early in the second half, the Storm attack showed signs of life. Sophomore Stephanie Havens (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) slotted a ball to junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), but Martino, who switched from a field player into goal following an injury, came out and made the diving save on Capek’s shot.

A short while later, senior Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) found Havens inside the box, but Havens’ shot was also saved by Martino to preserve the one-goal lead.

Senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) made six saves for the Storm, including several from in close to keep the deficit at one goal.

With 10:06 remaining, Engelbert made a big save on Harrisburg’s Nikki Francis. Francis beat her defender and was one-on-one with Engelbert right outside the net, but Engelbert corralled the point-blank shot.

The Storm return to action with a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday night against Alfred University.
