Men’s Soccer Rallies Late, Falls 3-2

BOXSCORE

The Keuka College men’s soccer team took on an aggressive, physical Penn State-Harrisburg team on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and while the Storm made a late rally to make the contest close, it wasn’t enough as Keuka fell to Penn State-Harrisburg 3-2.

Trailing 3-0 with just more than five minutes remaining in the game, junior forward John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) scored twice a span of two minutes and 12 seconds as the Storm frantically tried to notch the equalizer. But despite having a shot with 30 seconds left, the Storm couldn’t score the tying goal and fell to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).

Sophomore Mel Rogers (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) played an accurate ball into Mastrella, who slid his shot past a diving Harrisburg goalie to get Keuka on the board, down 3-1 with 5:12 remaining.

Junior Reis Cunningham (Red Creek, NY/Red Creek) chipped in a beautiful ball to Mastrella more than two minutes later, and Mastrella scored towards the far side of the goal for a 3-2 deficit.

Junior Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) made several point-blank saves in the first half to keep the Storm in the game. After a relatively uneventful first 10 minutes, the Lions began to create some good looks on goal, but each time, Condon was there with an answer. Penn State-Harrisburg’s Josh Bitner blasted a shot on goal in the 16th minute that Condon made a nice diving save to his left to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes later though, the Lions broke through. Nana Nyantekyi collected a rebound in front of goal and sent a header high over Condon’s head and under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. Keuka’s attack wasn’t able to generate many good looks in the half, as the Storm was outshot 12-3. With 10:52 left in the opening half, the Lions seemed poised to take a 2-0 lead, but Condon came out of goal and slid to make a stop on Bitner and keep it a one-goal game.

Unfortunately for the Storm, the 1-0 deficit grew early in the second half. Just 4:58 into the second, Josh Clinger collected a loose ball and slid his shot past a diving Condon for a 2-0 lead. Less than 2:30 after the second goal, the Lions tacked on another score to push the lead to 3-0. That’s how the score remained until Keuka made its frantic late-game comeback attempt.

Condon finished with 12 saves for Keuka, which was outshot 25-6.

Keuka returns to action with a 1 p.m. road game on Saturday, Oct. 1 against NEAC rival Cazenovia College.

Keuka Honors Lyle P. Corey

Family members of the late Lyle P. Corey (from right to left: Alice Corey, Joanne Corey, Michael Corey, Maddie Corey and Caron Lehmann) hold onto the Hall of Fame plaque awarded to Mr. Corey for his contributions to Keuka College athletics.

In-between Keuka College’s soccer doubleheader on Saturday, Keuka paid tribute to a proud supporter of Keuka’s athletics programs and its student-athletes when Lyle P. Corey, the late president of Keuka’s sports booster club, was inducted into the College’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mr. Corey, who passed away in August of 2010, became the 15th member of Keuka’s Athletics Hall of Fame, and was remembered as a passionate supporter of the Storm’s 16 varsity sports teams.

Keuka's soccer and lacrosse press box was dedicated in honor of the late Lyle P. Corey, past president of the Stormwatchers sports booster club.

Keuka's soccer and lacrosse press box was dedicated in honor of the late Lyle P. Corey, past president of the Stormwatchers sports booster club.

The college rededicated the press box at the soccer and lacrosse fields in Mr. Corey’s honor, and a green and gold banner reading “Lyle P. Corey Press Box” was unveiled during an emotional ceremony following the conclusion of Keuka’s men’s soccer team’s 7-0 win over Gallaudet University.

The ceremony featured remarks by David Sweet, director of athletics and head coach of the women’s basketball team; College President Dr. Jorge L. Díaz-Herrera; Bill Goodrich, president and CEO of LeChase Construction; Tom Bennett, a member of Stormwatchers, Keuka’s sports booster club; and three members of Corey’s family: wife, Joanne; daughter, Caron Lehmann; and son, Michael.

Each member of the Hall Fame, located in the Weed Physical Arts Center, is featured on a plaque that includes a photo and summary of his or her athletic accomplishments at Keuka or contributions to the intercollegiate athletics program. The Lyle P. Corey Hall of Fame plaque was unveiled at Saturday’s ceremony.

Corey served as president of the Stormwatchers from 2003 until his death in August 2010. The senior vice president of LeChase Construction Services in Rochester was a resident of Victor and native of Penn Yan.

He played a key role in the construction of the press box, one of many projects funded by Stormwatchers that benefit student-athletes and the intercollegiate athletics program.

Corey and his company also undertook leadership roles in the renovation of Ball Hall, the College’s venerable original building.

Women’s Soccer Blanks Gallaudet

Junior Sarah Hillman scored her first goal in two years to lift Keuka College past Gallaudet 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

Junior Sarah Hillman scored her first goal in two years to lift Keuka College past Gallaudet 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

BOXSCORE

It was a day of firsts for the members of the Keuka College women’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon, and the Storm was left with many reasons to celebrate on Saturday afternoon.

After starting off the year with four straight road contests, the Storm returned home to the Jephson Community Athletic Complex for the first time during the 2011 season when it hosted North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Gallaudet University as part of the college’s annual Family Weekend.

In her first-ever start in goal at any level of soccer, senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) stopped all six shots she faced for her first-ever shutout.

Junior Sarah Hillman (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) and senior Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each added their first goals of the season as three different women found the back of the net on a picture-perfect late-summer afternoon.

A balanced Storm (2-2-1, 2-1-1 NEAC) squad picked up its second straight victory with a convincing 3-0 win before a spirited Family Weekend crowd.

“This win means a lot to us. This crowd we had today was the biggest we’ve had since I arrived on campus three years ago,” said Hillman, who credited Keuka’s communication, its ability to play accurate through balls and its dedication to making and finishing its runs with the win.

“There was a lot of positive energy and adrenaline pumping us up, and with the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, with Family Weekend and with the press box dedication, it was a big day for our school.

Things took some time to develop against the Bison. Several members of the Storm had solid scoring opportunities early on, but the game was scoreless through the first 29 minutes until junior Nicole Sharick (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) received a pass from freshman Kristen Bartholomay (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and pushed her shot into the far side of the net for a 1-0 lead with 15:18 remaining in the opening half.

The Storm defense contained the Bison attack, and the lead grew to 2-0 in the 38th minute. Disbrow collected a loose ball in front of a crowded Gallaudet goal area and was credited with scoring after her shot ricocheted off a Gallaudet player and went into the back of the net.

Sporting a two-goal halftime lead, the Storm kept up the offensive pressure in the second half. Sharick and junior Terin Brown (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) each had good looks on goal in the first two minutes of the half, but each time the threat was contained, until Hillman fired a 25-yard shot with her right foot that found a home in the upper-right corner of the net with 34:07 remaining.

“I tried to cross the ball and I thought it was going to go wide of the upper 90, but as soon as it fell into the upper 90 I got such an adrenaline rush,” Hillman said after her first goal since a 10-0 shellacking of Wilson College on Sept. 12, 2009.

“I’m not an offensive-minded player, I’m more defensive-minded for the most part, so scoring definitely felt really good. After my goal, we realized we didn’t have to take the ball into the 18, we could use our power and touch to score from outside.”

Engelbert, making her first start in goal for the Green and Gold, was tested several times by the Bison attack, but turned away all shots, including several point-blank efforts, to earn the shutout.

“Morgan was awesome today, she came in to help us out because we’re low on numbers this year, and she’s been great at doing whatever we need her to do,” Disbrow said. “She’d never played goalie before, but she did really well today and made several point-blank saves. Morgan played her lines well and also communicated with us, telling us where our people were and when we needed to mark up.”

Keuka enjoyed a 30-10 edge in shots, including an impressive 17-3 advantage in the first half, as 11 different members of the Storm recorded a shot on goal. Keuka also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Storm return to action with a 3 p.m. clash against NEAC rival Penn State-Harrisburg Sunday afternoon at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

“It’s definitely nice to get a win, this is the first home game we’ve had and it’s nice to go out and get wins because that builds our confidence up, since we are kind of young,” Disbrow said of a Keuka squad boasting two seniors, six juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen.

“We hope to bring this momentum into tomorrow because we’re playing a real good team in Penn State-Harrisburg. We’re hoping to build on today and if we can work together, we definitely have a shot.”

For the third time in four meets, freshman Lee Bottoni was Keuka's top finisher during the annual Harry F. Anderson Invitational Saturday afternoon.

For the third time in four meets, freshman Lee Bottoni was Keuka's top finisher during the annual Harry F. Anderson Invitational Saturday afternoon.

MEN’S RESULTS

The Keuka College men’s cross country team traveled to Roberts Wesleyan College for the annual Harry F. Anderson Invitational, and facing some of the top competition in the region, the Storm placed 9th out of 12 teams Saturday afternoon.

For the third time in four meets, freshman Lee Bottoni (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) was the top Keuka finisher. Bottoni, who led for most of the race last weekend during the Hobart Invitational before earning a second-place finish, ran the 8K course in 30 minutes, three seconds, good enough for 45th place among scoring runners.

As has been the case for all four Keuka meets, Bottoni was followed by four freshman in the top five for the Storm. Samuel Capozzi (Alpine, NY/Odessa-Montour) raced in 30:46, narrowly edging out teammate Bobby Fogle (Lockport, NY/Lockport) by one full second for 52nd place. Fogle came in 53rd place while Alex Pollinger (Arkport, NY/Arkport) finished 54th in a time of 31:10 and Shane Devlin (Manchester, NY/Red Jacket) was 63rd with an effort of 32:41.

There were 117 finishers from 12 different colleges from all across the eastern region of the country.

The University of Rochester Yellowjackets won the team title with 40 points, followed by Mercyhurst (66), Penn State-Behrend (101), SUNY Fredonia (103), Gannon (115), host Roberts Wesleyan (117), Nazareth (190) and Gordon (250). Keuka’s men scored 267 points to edge out Wells (268), D’Youville (330) and Hilbert (363).

The Storm returns to action with a 6 p.m. dual meet Wednesday night at Wells College.

Big Win for Men’s Soccer

Junior John Mastrella, left, scored twice as Keuka College routed Gallaudet 7-0 on Saturday.

BOXSCORE

Heading into Saturday’s Family Weekend home game against Gallaudet University, the Keuka College men’s soccer team had scored 11 goals and averaged of 2.2 goals per game during its 4-1 start to the 2011 season.

Against the Bison, a creative and aggressive Storm attack exploded for four first-half goals en route to a 7-0 victory Saturday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Junior Ron Burd (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored his first three goals of the season, junior John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) scored two first-half goals and freshman Alex Palermo (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and sophomore Mel Rogers (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) each added a goal as the Storm (5-1 overall, 2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) scored its most goals of the season.

Sophomore Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added two assists and sophomore Franklin Koehler (Bath, NY/Bath) added an assist in the highest-scoring game for the Storm since a 9-0 road win at D’Youville College on Oct. 3, 2007.

“We knew we were going to have a big crowd today and we wanted to show them all what we can do,” Burd said after the second career hat trick at any level of organized soccer.

“With our talented offense, we know we can score seven goals in a game against a good conference opponent. We’ve had our opportunities this year and we haven’t converted, but today we worked hard to get in a good position, we had people in the right place and we worked hard for our chances, so those factors led to our great offense. This will definitely build our confidence.”

Following the men’s game, Keuka College paid tribute to the late Mr. Lyle P. Corey by inducting the former president of the Stormwatchers sports booster club into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Also, the beautiful press box, which is used primarily for the Storm’s soccer and lacrosse teams, was dedicated in honor of Mr. Corey, who passed away in Aug. of 2010.

Keuka enjoyed a 29-5 edge in shots, including a 19-2 advantage in the second half, as eight different Keuka players recorded shots on goal.

Defensively, the Storm denied Gallaudet’s (0-5, 0-2 NEAC) forwards and midfielders, and the Bison struggled all game to maintain a sustained attack. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal over the first nine minutes.

Following a scoreless first 12 minutes and 42 seconds, the Storm struck first after some nice passing from Schreiber. Schreiber received the ball on the far side of the goal and made a perfect touch to Mastrella, who converted his header into the upper-left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Less than three minutes later, sophomore Koehler made a quick touch from inside the goal box to Palermo. Palermo scored to the far post for a 2-0 lead with 29:44 remaining in the first half.

Mastrella scored his second goal of the half roughly 11 minutes later. After getting the ball outside of the box, Mastrella dribbled in and pushed his shot into towards the far side of the goal for a 3-0 lead. The Storm scored three times in less than 15 minutes to seize control of the game on a sunny Parents’ Day game, but Keuka wasn’t done scoring in the half.

Burd, who was held scoreless during Keuka’s first five games, took on the Gallaudet keeper 1-on-1 and scored into the far portion of the goal with 11:24 remaining in the half. The score stayed 4-0 through the end of the half, but Keuka – specifically Burd – tacked on two more goals in a span of 9:11 to extend the lead to 6-0.

Rogers finished the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.

“We came out fired up today with a lot of energy, and they just couldn’t match our energy and our pace,” Mastrella said after his second two-goal game this year upped his season total to a team-high four goals.

“We had 10 days off (between now and our last game against D’Youville), and coach (Matt Tantalo) called this our second preseason. We had good pace with our attack … This is a team game, we don’t get these great chances without people making good plays to set us up. We were unselfish and found the open people.”

Junior Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) started and made one save. Freshman Shane Bly (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) played the entire second half and also made one save for the Storm.

The Storm return to action with a 1 p.m. NEAC clash Sunday afternoon against Penn State-Harrisburg back at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
