After another consistent week’s worth of games, Smyder was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference’s (NEAC) Women’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 31.

Facing Cazenovia at home Wednesday night in a must-win game where the winnerBrittany-Smyder earned a spot in the NEAC tournament and the loser’s season was finished, Smyder delivered with eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage as the Storm swept Cazenovia by a score of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19. With the win, Keuka secured the fifth and final NEAC playoff spot.

Smyder currently leads the Storm in total blocks (73) and is second in kills (250) and service aces (40).

Women’s Soccer Hosting Penn State-Berks in NEAC Quarterfinals

October 31, 2011

Nicole Sharick and the Keuka women's soccer team will host Penn State-Berks at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in a NEAC quarterfinal game.

Nicole Sharick and the Keuka women's soccer team will host Penn State-Berks at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in a NEAC quarterfinal game.

Since suffering a 9-0 setback at home to SUNY Geneseo, the Keuka College women’s soccer team has been on a tear, winning five of six games to secure the fourth seed in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason tournament, which kicks off at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Storm (8-6-1 overall, 8-3-1 NEAC) hosts fifth-seeded Penn State-Berks (7-3-1 NEAC) at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex in the quarterfinals of the six-team tournament.

The Storm has outscored the opposition 19-11 during the hot spell, including earning a 4-2 win over Morrisville State on Oct. 25 and a 3-2 victory over SUNYIT during Saturday’s Senior Day festivities.

Junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) chose a good time to score her first two goals of the season. The playmaking and distributing forward, who leads the Storm with five assists, got into the scoring act Saturday to help shore up the Storm’s NEAC postseason chances as Keuka picked up a hard-fought win over the Wildcats.

Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) also scored while Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) made eight saves for her seventh win.

Tuesday’s NEAC quarterfinal match will be the 10th meeting between Berks and Keuka, and the third in the postseason. Keuka has captured both playoff meetings and leads the all-time series 6-2-1.

“It’s big heading into the NEAC tournament to win like this (over SUNYIT), now we have a lot of momentum heading into NEAC’s,” Capek said after Saturday’s Senior Day win.

“I think we’re peaking at the perfect time. … At this point in the season it’s so important to come out, play together and win because we know we have a chance to play in the NEAC’s and see how far we can go.”

Keuka traveled to Lancaster on Sept. 10 for the NEAC opener for both schools. Junior Nicole Sharick (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) scored the equalizer in the 66th minute as the Storm rallied for a 1-1 tie with Berks. The Nittany Lions had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Natalie Woods in the 59th minute before Sharick responded with the clutch tying goal. After receiving a chipped ball on a breakaway, Sharick beat her defender with her dribble, got the Berks goalie to come out of the net and buried the shot into the lower-right corner of the net for the Storm.

Freshman Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) tied a career-high with 12 saves in goal for Keuka. A lot has changed for both teams since that match. Swarts is now a solid contributor in the midfield for Keuka, having scored both of her goals during the Storm’s last four games.

Sharick leads the Storm in scoring (six goals, three assists, 15 points), followed by junior Terin Brown (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), who has five goals (10 points), Capek (2G, 5A, 10 points) and Disbrow (3G, 1A, 7 points). Sophomore Britni Burch (Almond, NY/Arkport) has added three goals for Keuka, which scored seven goals in its first nine games before exploding for 19 over its last six games.

Engelbert, in her first-ever season playing soccer at any level, has an impressive 7-4 record and has made 91 saves while allowing 23 goals (a 2.08 goals-against average) with three shutouts.

Lyndsay Naughton leads the Nittany Lion offensive attack with nine goals and three assists (21 points), followed by Natalie Woods (5G, 2A, 12 points), Alexa Shumate (3G, 5A, 11 points), Chelsea Ray (2G, 1A, 5 points) and Melissa Bennett (1G, 3A 5 points). In goal, Savannah Cramer has started all 16 games and is 8-6-1 with 75 saves, a 1.36 goals-against average and six shutouts.

Top seed Lancaster Bible College (11-0 NEAC), the NEAC’s regular-season champion, will face the winner of Keuka and Penn State-Berks in one semifinal, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. No. 2 Penn State-Abington (11-1 NEAC) awaits the winner of No. 3 Penn State-Harrisburg (8-3) and No. 6 SUNYIT (6-4-1) in the other semifinal, which will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“This season has been a little difficult for us, it’s been hard between injuries and always altering our starting lineups so people are in different spots,” said Disbrow, one of two seniors on the roster.

“We’ve developed into more of a cohesive unit because we’ve been playing this way for a couple of games now. Having this lineup on the field is definitely a step in the right direction and we’re just looking forward to the postseason. I think we will be a threat.”

The NEAC championship game will occur at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with the winner earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Men’s Soccer Hosting Lancaster Bible in NEAC Quarterfinals

October 31, 2011

Justin Ryan (No. 12) and the No. 4 seed Keuka College men's soccer team will host No. 5 seed Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC quarterfinal contest at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Justin Ryan (No. 12) and the No. 4 seed Keuka College men's soccer team will host No. 5 seed Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC quarterfinal contest at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The Keuka College men’s soccer team has just one win in its last four games, but don’t let the win-loss record fool you, the Storm is playing some of its best soccer of the 2011 season, according to junior goalie Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and sophomore midfielder Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton).

Heading into Tuesday afternoon’s 2 p.m. North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) quarterfinal clash with No. 5 seed Lancaster Bible College (9-9-2, 5-3-2 NEAC), the fourth-seeded Storm (8-4-3, 5-3-2) has played inspired soccer during its recent 1-1-2 stretch.

While the Storm hasn’t won since a 2-1 road win over Lancaster Bible College on Oct. 20, twice in the last four games the Storm has rallied from a late-game deficit to force a draw, earning hard-fought ties against Morrisville State (2-2 on Oct. 25) and NEAC regular-season champion SUNYIT (1-1 on Oct. 29).

Against the Mustangs, Keuka trailed 2-0 for much of the game, and was down 2-1 entering the 90th minute before Schreiber played a free kick into the box for junior Reis Cunningham (Red Creek, NY/Red Creek). With Keuka’s playoff hopes flickering, Cunningham sent a header high over Morrisville State goalie Shane Sullivan’s arms to tie the score with 1.5 seconds remaining. It was Cunningham’s first goal of the season, and capped a frantic Keuka rally from a 2-0 deficit. Cunningham also assisted on the Storm’s first goal, a bicycle kick from junior Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) in the 66th minute that trimmed the deficit to 2-1.

Facing first place SUNYIT on Saturday, Cunningham and the rest of Keuka’s defense clamped down on a potent IT offense and limited the Wildcats to just one goal. Keuka, which trailed 1-0 at halftime, would use its stifling defense to hold the deficit at one goal before sophomore Frank Iacovangelo (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) broke through with the equalizer in the 76th minute.

Cunningham, Condon and the rest of the Storm’s defense made sure SUNYIT didn’t score down the stretch of regulation or the 20-minute overtime periods to clinch the fourth seed in the NEAC tournament.

Condon made a big save in the first overtime period to keep the game tied, and finished with nine saves as the Storm improved to 3-1-3 in its last seven games heading into Tuesday’s quarterfinal.

“We’re definitely a lot more confident than we were last week (at this time),” said Schreiber, who is third on the team with nine points (two goals, five assists).

“We didn’t expect to get a home game, it was a big surprise and we love playing in front of the home crowd. Not having to travel during the middle of the week is big for us, too. We’re definitely really confident about the game.”

Knowing the team can comeback from a late-game deficit has fueled the Storm’s confidence, said Schreiber. Against SUNYIT, in a game where Keuka needed at least a draw to ensure its playoff position, the Storm contained and shut down SUNYIT’s playmakers and limited the speedy Wildcats. Whenever a SUNYIT player had a scoring opportunity, Condon turned them all away.

The reigning three-time NEAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, Condon has stopped 137 shots while allowing only 17 goals (a 1.13 goals-against average).

“We did what we had to do to make NEAC’s and we know it’s a new season now,” Condon said. “Everyone is at the same stage this time of year and there’s really no difference between the top seed and the fifth seed, everyone has the same skill set. It’s huge for us to be at home as we try to take Lancaster Bible College down. We’re mentally prepared for this game, it’s all about who is mentally prepared and who has the heart to tough it out and get the win. “

During Keuka’s only prior match against Lancaster Bible this fall, the Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Iacovangelo’s second goal in his last three games. Freshman Austin Gerber (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) served in a well-placed ball from 35 yards out towards the back post for Iacovangelo, who had snuck into the back of Lancaster’s defense.

Iacovangelo received the pass on the edge of the six-yard line and sent a header into the near portion of the goal for the lead in the 20th minute. Lancaster Bible responded with the tying goal in the 44th minute, knotting the score at 1-all when Sean Westerlund beat the Keuka defense and scored just 1:47 before halftime.

On the eventual game-winning goal, again Gerber and Iacovangelo were involved, but this time it was Iacovangelo setting up Gerber. On a quick-strike counter attack from 45 yards out, Iacovangelo served a ball into the box for Gerber, who had made a long diagonal run into the goal area. Iacovangelo’s pass drew Jarrod Bergey, Lancaster’s goalie, off his line and Gerber sent a header high over Bergey’s head for the eventual winning goal in the 70th minute.

Smith paces an efficient Keuka attack, having scored a team-most 20 points on a team-high eight goals and four assists. Junior John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) has scored eight goals with an assist (17 points), followed by Schreiber (nine points), junior Ron Burd (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), who has four goals for eight points, and Iacovangelo, who has seven points on three goals and an assist.

Taylor Dooley (10 G, 3A) and Westerlund (9G, 5A) are Lancaster’s leading scorers with 23 points, followed by Cory Greiser (6G, 3A, 15 points). In goal, Jarrod Bergey has started all 19 games and has allowed 38 goals with 90 saves (a .732 saves percentage) and a 1.80 goals-against average.

A win over Lancaster Bible would send the Storm to the NEAC semifinals, where top seed SUNYIT (7-0-3 NEAC) awaits in the semifinals, which will be played at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning. No. 2 Cazenovia (6-1-3) and No. 3 Penn State-Harrisburg (5-3-1) will play in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The NEAC championship game will occur at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with the winner earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

“I definitely think we can win the (NEAC) tournament,” Schreiber said. “If we play our best soccer, there’s not a team out there that we can’t beat. … We’ve definitely exceeded expectations this year. We knew we had the opportunity to be good, but I didn’t think we’d be as successful as we have been. Once we had the early success (winning five of the first six games), the switch turned on and we knew we could succeed.”

Cunningham, Capek Net Athlete of the Week Honors

October 31, 2011

Juniors Reis Cunningham (Red Creek, NY/Red Creek) and Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) both chose the perfect time to score their first goals of the season, and thanks to the clutch goals, both Keuka’s men’s and women’s soccer teams earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason tournament. Cunningham and Capek have been named Keuka College’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

With time running out during Tuesday afternoon’s pivotal NEAC showdown with Morrisville State, the Keuka men’s soccer team got a huge tying goal late in regulation to keep its postseason dreams alive.

The Storm (8-4-2, 5-3-1 NEAC) rallied to earn a point with a hard-fought 2-2 overtime draw with the Mustangs on a windy afternoon at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Trailing for the first 89 minutes and 55 seconds, sophomore Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton) played a free kick into the box for Cunningham. With Keuka trailing 2-1, Cunningham sent a header high over Morrisville State goalie Shane Sullivan’s arms to tie the score with 1.5 seconds remaining.

Capek scored two goals and added an assist as Keuka’s women’s soccer team (8-6-1, 8-3-1 NEAC) clinched the No. 4 seed in the NEAC tournament. Capek scored her first two goals of the season in the 3-2 win Saturday over SUNYIT, and added an assist during a 4-2 win over Morrisville State. She leads the Storm with five assists.

After SUNYIT tied the score midway through the second half, Capek reclaimed the lead when she converted off a bad clear by the Wildcats, collecting a loose ball and scoring from 15 yards out into the upper-middle portion of the goal in the 74th minute. SUNYIT knotted the score at 2-all with 8:29 remaining, but Capek made sure Keuka’s three seniors walked away victorious on Senior Day.

Sophomore Stephanie Havens (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) sent a cross from the right side of the goal area into the middle of the box for Capek, who turned and pushed her shot into the far post with 5:05 remaining as Keuka won for the fifth time in six games.

BOXSCORE

Junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) chose a good time to score her first two goals of the season.

The playmaking and distributing forward, who leads the Storm with five assists, got into the scoring act during Saturday’s Senior Day game against SUNYIT to help shore up the Storm’s postseason chances as Keuka (8-6-1, 8-3-1) picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over SUNYIT at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

“This was huge to get the win. Last year we had a rough game against SUNYIT and lost 7-1, so coming back this year and beating them was huge for us,” Capek said with a broad smile after the Storm won for the fifth time in six games.

“It’s big heading into the NEAC tournament to win like this, now we have a lot of momentum heading into NEAC’s. I think we’re peaking at the perfect time. … At this point in the season it’s so important to come out, play together and win because we know we have a chance to play in the NEAC’s and see how far we can go.”

With the regular season finished, Keuka earned the fourth seed in the NEAC postseason tournament. The top six teams in the standings qualify for the tournament, which runs Nov. 1-6.

Keuka will host fifth-place Penn State-Berks (7-3-1) in a NEAC quarterfinal game at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, senior Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) staked the Storm to a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute. With less than 30 minutes remaining, junior Shelby Seeley (Livonia, NY/Livonia) chipped a pass from 30 yards out into Disbrow, who hit a right-footed shot that sailed over the head of SUNYIT keeper Aubrey Campbell. It was Disbrow’s third goal of the season, and all three goals have come during home games.

“It was sweet to score on Senior Day,” said Disbrow, who along with goalie Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) and student-assistant coach Sara James were honored for their Keuka careers at halftime of Saturday’s game.

“But my goal was all because of Shelby. She had an awesome cross in and I just got a foot on it and it happened to go over the goalie, so all the credit goes to her … and Capek was just awesome out there today.”

SUNYIT tied it 90 seconds later before Capek came through with her first goal of the season. Following a bad clear by the Wildcats, Capek collected a loose ball and ripped a shot from 15 yards out that soared into the upper-middle portion of the goal in the 74th minute. SUNYIT (8-8-1, 6-4-1) knotted the score at 2-all with 8:29 remaining, but Capek made sure Keuka’s three seniors walked away victorious on Senior Day.

Sophomore Stephanie Havens (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) sent a cross from the right side of the goal area into the middle of the box for Capek, who turned and pushed her shot into the far post with 5:05 remaining.

Engelbert made eight saves for her seventh win of the year.

“I feel this is a step in the right direction,” Disbrow said. “This season has been a little difficult for us, it’s been hard between injuries and always altering our starting lineups so people are in different spots. We’ve developed into more of a cohesive unit because we’ve been playing this way for a couple of games now. Having this lineup on the field is definitely a step in the right direction and we’re just looking forward to the postseason. I think we will be a threat.”

BOXSCORE

The Keuka College men’s soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit to tie first-place SUNYIT 1-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

With the regular season finished, Keuka (8-4-2, 5-3-2) clinched the fourth seed in the North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason tournament, which features the top five teams in the standings and runs Nov. 1-6.

The Storm will host fifth-seeded Lancaster Bible College (5-3-2) in a quarterfinal game at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

SUNYIT (7-5-4, 7-0-3), the first-place squad in the NEAC, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Francis Leighton received a cross from Regan Seydler and converted past junior goalie Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) 27 minutes and 45 seconds into the contest.

Facing a quick, physical SUNYIT team, the Storm kept up the offensive pressure, and it finally paid off with the equalizer goal in the 76th minute. Freshman Austin Gerber (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) played a ball into sophomore Frank Iacovangelo (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) 15 yards out. Iacovangelo made a touch and slid his shot into the lower-left portion of the goal to knot the score with 14:06 remaining in regulation. It was Iacovangelo’s third goal in Keuka’s last five games.

Though both teams threatened to score in the end of regulation, the game went into overtime. Condon made a big save in the first overtime period to keep the game tied, and finished with nine saves as the Storm improved to 3-1-2 in its last six games.
