Women’s Volleyball Earns Playoff Berth
October 26, 2011

Paige Golden (No. 4) recorded 20 digs with nine kills as Keuka's women's volleyball team earned a spot in the NEAC tournament with a sweep of Cazenovia College Wednesday night.
With its 2011 postseason dreams coming down to one match, the Keuka College women’s volleyball team responded with an all-around solid effort and swept Cazenovia College to earn the fifth and final playoff spot in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament.
Sophomore Paige Golden (Kent, NY/Albion) had nine kills and 20 digs, her sixth match with 20-plus digs, and junior Brittany Smyder (Avon, NY/Avon) added eight kills and just one error on 17 attempts (a .412 hitting percentage) as the host Storm (17-9, 6-4 NEAC) defeated Cazenovia by a score of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19 Wednesday night inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
In a win-or-go-home match versus the Wildcats (10-16, 5-5 NEAC), freshman Devan Curtis (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) added eight kills and two solo blocks, sophomore Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had 12 digs and classmate Jill Nolan (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) added 30 assists as Keuka picked up its 13th three-set sweep of the season.
Freshman Danielle Alred (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) finished with 4 kills, 3.5 total blocks and 3 digs for the Storm, which will face fourth-seeded Lancaster Bible College (12-16, 7-3 NEAC) at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 in the quarterfinals of the NEAC tournament.
“I thought our execution was great tonight and I thought it was good that we were switching up hitters and not just going outside, but we ran a lot of back sets which I thought really worked against their blockers, tiring them out,” said senior Hannah Doody (Tully, NY/Tully), who added eight digs in the win.
“We tried siding out at every point to get the win. If we gave them a point, we tried to side out and get the point back on the next play instead of letting them go on a run.”
In a back-and-forth first set, Keuka trailed by three points several times in the early going but found itself tied at 19-all on a big block from Smyder. With Smyder serving, the Storm closed out the set on a 6-0 run, aided by kills from Curtis and Alred, and an ace from Smyder.
Keuka once again trailed in the early portion of the second set as Cazenovia jumped out to a 9-5 lead before a Curtis kill swung the momentum back towards the Storm. With Nolan serving, Keuka went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Wildcats pulled even at 15 before Perry won four straight service points to take a 19-15 lead on a Golden kill, and Curtis and Golden added big kills down the stretch as the Storm won the second set.
During a see-saw third set, neither team led by more than three points until Nolan won a service point to put the Storm up 12-8. The teams traded points before Cazenovia went on a mini-run to claw within 20-18 before Curtis delivered a punishing kill for a 21-18 lead. Curtis added a kill for a 23-18 lead and served up the winning point on match point to clinch Keuka’s sixth straight NEAC tournament appearance.
Last year, Keuka, the NEAC’s No. 1 seed, fell to Penn State-Berks in a five-set match in the semifinals.
“We had some momentum heading into tonight’s match. We knew what we had to do, we played our game, played our defense and hit really well tonight,” said senior Rachael Perry (Nichols, NY/Tioga), who had four digs and one kill for the Storm.
“This feels great to be in the tournament, we still have some big games to play this weekend that we want to win, so we want to build up a winning streak going into the tournament, and we know what we have to do to beat Lancaster.”
The NEAC tournament runs Nov. 4-5 at top seeded Penn State-Berks (18-6, 10-0 NEAC). The top five teams in the 13-team NEAC qualify for postseason play. Gallaudet University (24-6, 9-1) earned the second seed, followed by SUNYIT (19-12, 8-2) and Lancaster Bible College.
Whoever wins between Keuka and Lancaster Bible College earns the right to face top-seed Berks in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Nov. 5. Gallaudet and SUNYIT will meet at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 in the other semifinal, with the NEAC championship match taking place at 3 p.m. Nov. 5.
The winner of the NEAC postseason tournament earns the conference’s automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.
“Every game is do-or-die now,” Doody said. “Every point, every ball that comes over the net is do-or-die, and we’re just going to give it our all because these are our last games.”
Before Keuka competes in the NEAC tournament, it will wrap up the regular season with two matches on Saturday. The Storm hosts Utica College at 11 a.m. before taking on Morrisville State at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.

Sharick’s Two Goals Spark Women’s Soccer
October 25, 2011

Junior Nicole Sharick scored two goals as the Keuka College women's soccer team picked up a 4-2 win over Morrisville State Tuesday night.
Freshman Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) scored her second goal in three games and junior Nicole Sharick (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) added two goals as the Keuka College women’s soccer team picked up a pivotal North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory with a 4-2 win over Morrisville State on a rainy Jephson Community Athletic Center field Tuesday night.
Sophomore Britni Burch (Almond, NY/Arkport) added her third goal of the season to finish off the scoring and help the Storm (7-6-1, 7-3-1 NEAC) solidify its postseason chances.
Keuka moved into a tie with Penn State-Berks (7-3-1 NEAC) for fourth-place in the NEAC standings. The top six teams earn berths in the postseason tournament, which runs Nov. 1-6. Keuka and Berks trail third-place Penn State-Harrisburg (7-3) by half a game, with Keuka and Berks having one NEAC contest remaining, and Harrisburg with two conference games remaining.
Swarts staked Keuka to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, collecting a rebound and converting her shot towards the far post for the early lead. It remained 1-0 into the second half, when Sharick collected a loose ball from Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) and scored in the 57th minute for a 2-0 lead.
The Storm defense denied every Mustangs (3-11-1, 2-9-1) opportunity before Burch pushed the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute.
Morrisville got on the board in the 72nd minute when Kara Collins scored on a scramble in front of the net, but Sharick responded with her second goal of the game, and team-leading sixth goal of 2011, in the 78th minute for a 4-1 lead.
Jordan Nadeau pulled the Mustangs within 4-2 in the 80th minute, but the Storm defense made the lead stand. Senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) made four saves for the win.
The Storm concludes the regular season with a 3 p.m. home showdown Saturday afternoon against SUNYIT (8-7-1, 6-3-1 NEAC). It will be Senior Day for Keuka’s three seniors: Elly Disbrow (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), Engelbert and student assistant coach Sara James (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) will be honored for their dedication to the Storm soccer team.

Cunningham’s Late Header Earns Men’s Soccer a Draw
October 25, 2011

Junior Reis Cunningham, left, tied the game at 2-all with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation as Keuka's men's soccer team rallied for a 2-all draw with Morrisville State Tuesday.
With time running out during Tuesday afternoon’s pivotal North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) showdown with Morrisville State, the Keuka College men’s soccer team got a huge tying goal late in regulation to keep its postseason dreams alive.
The Storm (8-4-2, 5-3-1 NEAC) rallied to earn a point with a hard-fought 2-2 overtime draw with the Mustangs on a windy afternoon at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Trailing for the first 89 minutes and 55 seconds, sophomore Nate Schreiber (Hilton, NY/Hilton) played a free kick into the box for junior Reis Cunningham (Red Creek, NY/Red Creek). With Keuka trailing 2-1, Cunningham sent a header high over Morrisville State goalie Shane Sullivan’s arms to tie the score with 1.5 seconds remaining. It was Cunningham’s first goal of the season, and capped a frantic Keuka rally from a 2-0 deficit.
Neither team was able to convert in the two golden-goal overtime periods, though Morrisville State did have a shot glance off the top of the crossbar. Junior Derek Condon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) made 12 saves to preserve the tie for the Storm, which wraps up the regular season with a 1 p.m. Senior Day home game against SUNYIT (7-5-3, 7-0-2 NEAC), the first-place team in the NEAC.
The top five teams in the standings qualify for the NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Nov. 1-6. Keuka currently sits in a tie for third place in the conference along with Penn State-Harrisburg (8-4-2, 5-3-1 NEAC). The Storm has a slight lead on fifth-place Penn State-Abington (7-7, 5-4 NEAC) with Keuka, Harrisburg and Abington all having one NEAC contest remaining to solidify their postseason berths.
The Mustangs (4-8-4, 4-3-3) had several solid looks on goal in the first half, but Condon denied each Morrisville State opportunity. Fifteen minutes into the game, Tom Huber ripped an 18-yard shot that Condon dove and made the save. Nearly four minutes later, it was Keuka’s turn to threaten with the first goal when Schreiber fed junior Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) inside the goal box. But Smith pushed his shot wide of the near post and the score remained 0-0.
The Morrisville attack finally broke through in the 23rd minute. Huber broke in on goal and fired a shot that Condon deflected. The ensuing loose ball came back out to Huber, who finished the rebound goal for a 1-0 lead.
With the first half winding down, Condon made another big save to deny the Mustangs a second first-half goal. Huber blasted a shot from 10 yards out that Condon dove to his left and made the clutch save, one of his six in the half.
A persistent Morrisville attack tacked on a second goal 15 minutes into the second half. Off a free kick from Joey Plummer, Alex Borini delivered a header into the far post, past the outstretched arms of Condon
The Storm finally got on the board in the 66th minute. Cunningham played a ball into Smith at the top of the box. In one fluid motion, Smith left his feet and struck a well-placed bicycle kick that sailed over Morrisville goalie Shane Sullivan’s head for Smith’s team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The score remained 2-1 until Schreiber and Cunningham hooked up on the clutch late-game goal.
