Men’s Hoops Looking for 1st Win
November 30, 2011

Junior Teddy Tuggles and the Keuka College men's basketball team hosts Hartwick College at 7 p.m. Thursday night. The Storm is searching for its first win of the 2011-12 season.
While the Keuka College men’s basketball team is still searching for its first win of the 2011-12 season, there have been reasons for optimism for the Storm.
Keuka (0-4) hosts Hartwick College (5-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday night inside the Weed Physical Arts Center, and the Storm will try and build off the positives from its tough home-opening loss to Houghton College, 68-63 on Nov. 22.
In that contest the Storm trailed the entire game, and was down 44-34 midway through the second half before freshmen Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 44-40. Freshman Joe Tortolon (Dundee, NY/Dundee), Healey and Wagner each made two free throws to keep the deficit at four, and when Healey sunk a pair from the free throw line the score was 52-50, but the Storm could draw no closer and dropped its fourth straight contest.
Junior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) led the Storm with 16 points and three steals and Wagner and Healey each added 10 points for Keuka, which lost despite holding the Highlanders (2-3) to 29.2 percent shooting in the second half.
Tuggles, Keuka’s Male Athlete of the Week, has reached double figures in scoring in each of the Storm’s four games, including scoring a career-high 24 points during the Storm’s 90-72 loss to Clarkson University in the consolation game of the Hilbert Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 19.
Freshman Coty Paige (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) is off to a solid start in the early portion of his Keuka career. The guard is second on the team in scoring (13.3 points per game) and is averaging four rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) is Keuka’s leading rebounder (6.3 rpg.) followed by freshman forward Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket), who is snaring 5.3 rebounds per game.
Hartwick is off to a 5-0 start for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Mark Blazek is the Hawks’ leading scorer, averaging 17.8 points per game. Blazek is one of three Hawks to average double-figure scoring, joined by Chris Ryder (13.8 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) and Jared Suderley (12.6 ppg.). The Hawks are undefeated despite outscoring its opponents by just 18 points (an average of 63.4-59.8 ppg.).
Keuka and Hartwick last squared off during the 2008-09 season, with Keuka suffering a 74-55 loss at Hartwick on Nov. 25, 2008.
Gravel, Tuggles Named Athletes of the Week
November 28, 2011
Sophomore guard Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) set a career-high in scoring for Keuka College’s women’s basketball team while junior guard Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) added two more double-figure scoring efforts for Keuka’s men’s basketball team. Their strong performances have netted Gravel and Tuggles Keuka College’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week.
Gravel scored a career-high 25 points in just 30 minutes of action as the Storm (2-1) picked up a 79-48 win over Hilbert College Tuesday night in its home opener. Gravel connected on 5 of 10 3-pointers and added 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists for Keuka, which placed three players in double-figures against the Hawks.
Gravel scored 17 first-half points as the Storm jumped out to a 48-26 halftime lead. Gravel and the Keuka defense limited Hilbert to just 25 percent shooting (15 of 60) in rebounding from Saturday’s loss to William Smith. Through three games, Gravel leads Keuka in scoring (19.0 points per game) and is tied for the team lead in steals (11).
Tuggles scored 16 points with 3 steals and 2 rebounds, but Keuka’s men’s basketball team dropped a tough home opener, 68-63 to Houghton College on Nov. 22. He followed that up with a 16-point, six-rebound night during a 72-60 home loss to Hartwick College on Dec. 1.
In a back-and-forth contest with Houghton, the Storm trailed 44-34 midway through the second half before back-to-back three-pointers trimmed the deficit to 44-40. The Storm pulled within two at 52-50 but could draw no closer and lost despite holding the Highlanders to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
Through five games, Tuggles leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game and has reached double figures in each of Keuka’s (0-5) first five contests.

Despite outscoring the Houghton College Highlanders by seven points in the second half of Tuesday night’s home opener, the Keuka College men’s basketball team fell to Houghton 68-63 inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Keuka (0-4) trailed for the entire game, and was down 44-34 midway through the second half before freshmen Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 44-40. Freshman Joe Tortolon (Dundee, NY/Dundee), Healey and Wagner each made two free throws to keep the deficit at four, and when Healey sunk a pair from the free throw line the score was 52-50, but the Storm could draw no closer and dropped its fourth straight contest.

Women’s Hoops Clamps Down on Hilbert
November 22, 2011

Sophomore Danielle Gravel scored a career-high 25 points as Keuka's women's basketball team won its home opener, 79-48 over Hilbert Tuesday night.
The Keuka College women’s basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the 2011-12 season to defeat Hilbert College 79-48 Tuesday night in the home opener for the Storm.
Three members of the Storm (2-1) reached double-figures in scoring, led by sophomore Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) who set a career-high with 25 points, including 17 in the first half as Keuka jumped out to 48-26 lead.
Freshman Erica Pendrak (Utica, NY/New York Mills) also set a career-high in scoring with 19 points, including 12 in the second half as Keuka outscored the Hawks (0-4) 31-22. Pendrak also added six rebounds and four assists and Gravel had four steals for the Storm, which held Hilbert to 25 percent shooting (15 of 60).
“We played better defense tonight, and our goal is to hold people to 30-32 percent from the field, so we did that,” said Dave Sweet, Keuka’s 12th-year head coach.
“I thought we really did a good job of moving the ball and finding the open person tonight. And then we were shooting well from the outside.”
Sophomore Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) reached double-figures for the third straight game, scoring 10 points with 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Classmate Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor) added nine points and six rebounds for the Storm, which out-rebounded Hilbert 55-43.
On the heels of Saturday’s 99-78 loss to William Smith, when the Herons shot nearly 56 percent from the floor and converted a school-record 15 three-pointers, Sweet was pleased that his team bounced back and held the Hawks to just 2-for-22 on three-pointers (9.1 percent).
“This was a great win for us heading into the (Thanksgiving) break,” Sweet said. “This helps us set the tone now going forward. … We watched the tape (of the William Smith loss) and so we were able to see what we did wrong that hurt us, and then we practiced those things against what Hilbert was going to do to us during our Monday night practice. It was nice to see the payoff, we did the things correct and got an easy victory.”
The Storm returns to action with a 7 p.m. road game against Morrisville State on Dec. 7.
