The Storm (1-0) kicked off its 2011-12 season where it left off last year, breezing past SUNY Canton 79-39 Tuesday night inside Canton’s gymnasium to win for the 25th time in its last 28 games.

Sophomore Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) led a potent Storm offense with 23 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field as Keuka jumped out to a 39-16 halftime lead after shooting a red-hot 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from the field. Bandrowski added five steals and five assists and hit 2 of her 3 attempts from three-point range in tying her career-high for points in a single game.

“Jessica was in attack mode tonight, and she played under control,” said Dave Sweet, Keuka’s 12th-year head coach.

“She made her first seven shots and handled the ball well for us. She got us out on the run well and really attacked the defense. Jessica is starting to play with more maturity, we’ve known she’s got good basketball skills and athletic ability, and when she plays smart like she did tonight, we play well.”

Eleven of Keuka’s 12 players scored, including freshman Brittany Hadley (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg), who scored 10 points in her first collegiate game. Sophomore Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) chipped in with 9 points, 6 steals and 3 assists, classmate Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor) had eight points in 18 minutes of action and freshman Erica Pendrak (Utica, NY/New York Mills) added seven points on 3-of-5 shooting for Keuka, which forced 34 turnovers on 17 steals. Eight different Storm players recorded a steal.

“Our team responded very well tonight, (Mariah Mouzon) gave us some good rebounding and Taylor was aggressive with the ball and took it right to the basket,” Sweet said. “That was the best game we’ve seen from her. When we attack like we did tonight, we will do well.”

The Storm returns to action with a 7 p.m. game Saturday night at the William Smith College Herons, down the road in Geneva, NY.

Women’s Basketball Season Preview

November 13, 2011

Sophomore Jessica Bandrowski and the Keuka College women's basketball team is poised to make another run at a NEAC title and potentially an NCAA berth during the 2011-12 season.

Sophomore Jessica Bandrowski and the Keuka College women's basketball team is poised to make another run at a NEAC title and potentially an NCAA berth during the 2011-12 season.

The Keuka College women’s basketball team enjoyed a magical 2010-11 season, winning the second-most games in school history (24) while earning the program’s third trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Keuka posted a 24-3 record and qualified for the NCAA tournament before falling to William Paterson (NJ) University in the first round of the NCAA’s during the 2010-11 season.

The road back to the NCAA tournament will feature showdowns with fellow NCAA participants Gallaudet University and SUNY Geneseo as Keuka once again faces a challenging non-conference schedule.

The Storm kicks off the 2011-12 season with three non-conference games: Keuka travels to SUNY Canton on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. clash before heading to Geneva for a matchup against the always-formidable William Smith Herons at 7 p.m. Saturday night. The Storm’s home opener is at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 against Hilbert College.

The Storm were the fifth-best team in the country in team defense, having allowed only four opponents to score more than 60 points in a game, and Keuka returns two starters and nine players from a squad that won the most games since the 1989-90 version went 25-3.

“We’re known for our man-to-man defense, also for our matchup zones. The biggest thing is we just tend to get after people and we work very hard at making sure you don’t get easy shots,” said head coach Dave Sweet, in his 12th season leading the Storm.

“Everything is contested, and so, because of that, especially with our guards it will fuel our fast break which could make us a very explosive team and fun to watch.”

Keuka will be led by a pair of third-team All-NEAC picks: sophomore point guard Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches), who averaged nine points per game to go with 63 steals and 61 assists, and junior center Mariah Mouzon (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy), who averaged 9.3 ppg. and 7.9 rebounds per game while making 44.8 percent of her shots. The Storm will feature experience both in the paint and on the perimeter.

“They both (Jessica and Mariah) have to lead for us, on and off the floor,” said Sweet, who sports an impressive 175-96 record (a .646 winning percentage) as Keuka’s coach.

“We’re seeing more maturity out of both of them. Mariah could be one of the best players in the conference and I think our personal goal for her would be her competing for the MVP of the conference and certainly making first-team all-conference. We’re asking for Jessica to be the leading point guard on the team, so she will have the ball in her hands an awful lot. She’s very explosive both offensively and defensively, and I put those same kind of goals on her as I put on Mariah. … I think she will certainly be very exciting to watch on the floor. The biggest thing is, they have to bring leadership, and if they bring leadership I think we’ll have a pretty good team this year.”

After losing six seniors from the 2010-11 team, Keuka is still looking strong with newcomers Amanda Kubitz (Spencerport, NY/E.J. Wilson) and Erica Pendrak (Utica, NY/New York Mills) to assist Bandrowski in the guard spot alongside sophomore returners Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) and Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor).  Senior Morgan Engelbert (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) returns for her final year to assist Mouzon in the post.

Gravel played in all 27 games and averaged 6.6 ppg. while getting  52 rebounds, 35 steals and 31 assists while Engelbert also played in every game and finished with 4.4 ppg. and 3.0 rpg.

“In terms of her outside shot, Danielle (Gravel) will be a weapon for us and she has a great crossover,” Sweet said of his second-year guard, who connected on 32 of 77 three-pointers last year (.416 percent).

“Sophomore Casey Chamberlain (Perry, NY/Perry) is a six-footer who can go to the boards for us and rebound at both ends but she can also knock down a ‘3’, so I think she’ll be a threat. Certainly Erica (Pendrak) in terms of her ability to drive, penetrate and also hit 3’s, and Morgan (Engelbert) will be able to come in again and give us some real good minutes backing up Mariah in the post. … Taylor (Szwec) can be very deceptive at times and we’re waiting for her to break out of her shell to really show us the Class D Player of the Year she was in high school. I think it’s just a matter of time before that opens up and we really see the true Taylor.”

Junior Stephanie Strassner (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and sophomores Brittany Sinnott (Mt. Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) and Cortney Chamberlain (Perry, NY/Perry) round out Keuka’s returners. Besides Pendrak and Kubitz, the rest of the freshmen class includes forward Brittany Hadley (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) and guard Missy Keem (Silver Creek, NY/Silver Creek).

“I’m really impressed by their skills. They’re probably as good a group of basketball players that we’ve recruited as a whole in terms of freshmen, a little deeper class, not as deep as the class we just graduated, but there are certainly at least 3-4 players that can help us as the days go on,” Sweet said of his freshmen class.

“It will be a matter of how quickly they pick up our system. There will be some learning curves, but so far their attitude has been great and this team has been very fun to work with. Erica is a quick learner and she’s going to fight very quickly for the starting role, she’s a left-handed point guard that we can actually move over to the 2-guard spot if we need her.”

The Storm begins defense of its NEAC crown when it travels to Morrisville State for a 7 p.m. clash on Dec. 7. Keuka then plays host to four straight opponents, beginning with a 3 p.m. NEAC game with SUNY Cobleskill on Dec. 10, a weekend home series with Lancaster Bible College and Penn State-Berks on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 8, and the clash with the always-tough Geneseo Blue Knights. Geneseo won its opening-round NCAA game before falling in the second round while Gallaudet was knocked out in the opening round. The Storm will host Geneseo for a 6 p.m. showdown on Jan. 10.

One of the most anticipated games of the year will be the road contest with NEAC rival Gallaudet. The Bison handled the Storm in both regular season contests during the 2010-11 season before Keuka attained a measure of revenge with a 50-46 victory in the NEAC championship game. Keuka will travel to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet at 4 p.m. on Jan. 14.

Keuka will play NEAC rivals Cazenovia College, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNYIT, Morrisville State and Wells College twice while playing one game apiece with the rest of the NEAC, which includes Gallaudet, Lancaster Bible, Penn State-Abington, Penn State-Berks, Penn State-Harrisburg, the College of St. Elizabeth and Wilson College.

Coming off of Keuka’s eighth NEAC postseason title since the 2001-02 season, Sweet is confident his Storm can make it back to the conference tournament. If Keuka manages to claim another NEAC title, it might have to do it without Sweet, who is slated for full hip replacement surgery sometime in late December. Assistant coach Katie Marcella will take over the coaching reigns while Sweet, the longest-tenured women’s basketball coach in school history, recovers.

“I’m very confident that Katie will do a nice job, a very good job when I step down,” Sweet said of his assistant, who has been on staff for three years.

“The young ladies on the team are relating to her very well and they will rally around her and have a very good season so I’m not concerned about turning the reigns over to her.”
