Men’s Hoops Concludes 2011 at Coles Classic

December 15, 2011

Freshman Coty Paige and the Keuka men's basketball team will take on nationally-ranked Buffalo State Friday night in the opener of the Coles Classic, held in Buffalo, NY.

Freshman Coty Paige and the Keuka men's basketball team will take on nationally-ranked Buffalo State Friday night in the opener of the Coles Classic, held in Buffalo, NY.

The Keuka College men’s basketball team has been steadily improving since the beginning of the season, with the Storm picking up its first win of the year in convincing fashion following a 69-49 rout of SUNY Cobleskill on Dec. 10.

The Storm (1-6 overall, 1-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) will get a great chance to see how far it has come when Keuka takes on nationally-ranked Buffalo State (6-1, 3-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference) in the first round of the Coles Classic, at 8 p.m. Friday night in Buffalo.

The Bengals are ranked 21st in the country in the latest D3hoops.com national Division III men’s basketball poll and are led by Jake Simmons (21.3 points per game) and Justin Mitchell (13.6 ppg., 8.1 rebounds per game).

Last year Buffalo State went 23-7, captured the SUNYAC championship and earned a spot in the NCAA DIII tournament, where the Bengals won two games before falling in the Sweet 16 to St. Mary’s (MD) 85-74.

Slowing down Buffalo State’s offense, which is scoring 92.7 points per game while allowing 76.7 points per game, will be an important task for second-year head coach Thad Phillips’ squad.

During the recent home win over Cobleskill, freshman Coty Paige (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half as Keuka led for most of the game.

In the first half, Keuka trailed 5-0 before posting a 7-0 run to take the lead, which the Storm extended to 24-14 with 4:50 remaining on a jumper by junior Justin Napolitano (Syracuse, NY/Solvay). Cobleskill responded with a 9-2 spurt to trail 26-23, but the Storm recovered to hold a 31-25 lead at intermission.

The Storm opened the second half with a 24-4 burst to take command of the contest and cruised to the win. Paige, Keuka’s Male Athlete of the Week, hit 8 of 12 from the field, 1-for-5 from beyond the arc and went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line with seven rebounds in the win over the Tigers.

Freshman Jared Wagner (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) added eight points off the bench, classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) collected seven points and seven rebounds and junior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) dished out five assists. Keuka hit 25 of 61 shots from the field (41 percent) and hit 7 of 23 from long range.

For the season, Paige leads the Storm in scoring average (15 ppg.) and field goal percentage (.494) while making 39 of his 79 attempts. Paige is also tied with Hixson for second in rebounding average (5.4 rpg.), which trails only sophomore Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester), who is grabbing 7 rebounds per game. Tuggles is Keuka’s second leading scorer (14.0 ppg.).

If Keuka wins, it will play in the championship game against the winner of Morrisville State/Capital (Ohio) University at 4 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game occurs at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Smith Earns All-Region Selection in Men’s Soccer

December 13, 2011

Junior Nate Smith (in green) was named to the third-team All-East Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Junior Nate Smith (in green) was named third-team All-East Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Junior Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led the Keuka College men’s soccer team with eight goals and 20 points, and the hard-working midfielder was honored with a third-team All-East Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA).

For the 12th straight season, Keuka’s men’s soccer team (8-5-3 overall, 5-3-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference) finished with a winning record, and Smith’s play all over the field was a big reason for the Storm’s success.

Smith, a first-team All-NEAC selection, finished the year with eight goals and four assists, the second-most on the squad. He was tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals, including scoring on a flying header late in the 75th minute as Keuka defeated Wells College 2-1 on Oct. 17.

Smith scored three goals during the Storm’s first two games and had goals in three straight games from Oct. 4-13 as the Storm went 2-0-1.

Keuka has had three All-Region selections in the last two seasons, as Smith joins Brian Cunliffe and Jack Reece, who were named third-team All-Region during the 2010 season.

The Storm earned the fourth seed in the NEAC postseason tournament before falling at home to Lancaster Bible College 2-0 in the NEAC quarterfinals. Under seventh-year head coach Matt Tantalo, the Storm has compiled an impressive 67-38-`10 record (.626 winning percentage).

Paige, Bandrowski Named Athletes of the Week

December 12, 2011

Freshman Coty Paige (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) and sophomore Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) each averaged more than 15 points per game during two contests to earn Keuka College’s Male and Female Athlete of the Week honors.

Paige averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as the Keuka College men’s basketball team went 1-1 and picked up its first win of the season.

Paige scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half of Saturday’s North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) home contest against SUNY Cobleskill, as the Storm (1-6, 1-1 NEAC) defeated the Tigers 69-49 for its first win of the year.

Against Cobleskill, Paige made 8 of his 12 shots from the field and snared seven rebounds for the Storm, which put away Cobleskill with a 24-4 run to open the second half. Keuka, which trailed 5-0 before going on a 24-9 run, made 25 of 61 shots from the field (41 percent) and hit on 7 of its 23 three-pointers (30.4 percent).

Facing Morrisville State, Paige scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and added four steals in a 66-59 loss at the Mustangs. For the season, Paige is averaging 15 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Storm (1-6, 1-1 NEAC).

Bandrowski averaged 16.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game as the Keuka College women’s basketball team went 2-0 in NEAC play.

Bandrowski scored a game-high 19 points on 7 for 17 shooting as Keuka won its NEAC opener, 63-50 over Morrisville State Wednesday night.

Bandrowski followed that up with 14 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals during Saturday’s 62-37 home win over Cobleskill. On the year, Bandrowski is averaging 17.2 points per game on .485 percent shooting for Keuka (4-1, 2-0 NEAC).
