Keuka’s Student-Athletes Dominate Academic Awards
July 24, 2012
Keuka College’s student-athletes experienced tremendous on-field success during the 2011-12 academic year, winning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships in women’s basketball, softball and men’s lacrosse while remaining competitive in the other sports offerings.
The success wasn’t limited to the playing fields. In the classroom, the Storm’s student-athletes experienced more success, with Keuka placing 53 players on the NEAC’s Scholar-Athlete team for the 2011-12 academic year, the second-highest total in the conference behind Cazenovia (61).
Keuka’s women’s soccer team placed the most student-athletes on the Scholar-Athlete team with 11, followed by women’s lacrosse (eight) and softball (seven). The basketball team, which qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth time in six seasons, boasted five Scholar-Athletes, followed by volleyball (four), cross country (three) and tennis (two).
For the men’s sports, baseball, soccer and lacrosse each had five student-athletes chosen for the academic award, followed by cross country with four selections and basketball with one Scholar-Athlete.
Eight of Keuka’s honorees played on multiple sports teams, bringing the total number of Keuka’s Scholar-Athlete awards to 61.
All-told, the NEAC honored 430 student-athletes from 16 institutions with a Scholar-Athlete award. To be eligible, a student-athlete must achieve a combined grade-point average of 3.4 or higher for the fall and spring semesters, and must have been in good standing on his or her team. This year’s recipients represent 30 different states and nine different countries.
