Senior forward John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) has scored six goals with one assist over the first four games of the 2012 season, and on Tuesday, Mastrella was honored by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) as their Offensive Player of the Week.

Mastrella, who earned second-team All-NEAC honors in 2011, scored six goals with one assist over the first four games for Keuka (3-1, 1-1 NEAC) to claim the ECAC’s Division III Upstate Offensive Player of the Week honors, along with earning the NEAC’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Among the early-season highlights for Mastrella: a four-goal game during a 4-2 home win over D’Youville College on Sept. 1 during the Keuka Lakefront Classic.

Mastrella is one of just eight Division III players in the nation to record a four-goal game, and he currently ranks among the nation’s best in goals (6, tied for sixth among DIII players), points (13, tied for sixth), goals per game (1.5, tied for eighth) and points per game (3.25, tied for 14th).

Mastrella opened the year with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over Pitt-Bradford on Friday during the opening game of the Lakefront Classic before exploding for a career-best four goals the next day in the 4-2 victory over D’Youville College.

The dynamic Mastrella scored twice on headers in the first half to stake the Storm to a 2-0 lead. After D’Youville rallied to tie the game at two heading into halftime, Mastrella put the Green and Gold ahead for good in the 69th minute, sending a free kick from 20 yards into the far corner of the goal for his first career collegiate hat trick.

But Mastrella wasn’t done yet. He added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, when freshman Matt Hey (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) beat his defender and tapped a pass to Mastrella, who beat the keeper to finish the scoring.

Against Penn State-Berks, Mastrella finished the scoring off a feed from classmate Nate Smith (Hilton, NY/Hilton) in the 81st minute of a 3-0 shutout of Berks.

The Storm hits the road for a 2 p.m. NEAC clash against Wells College on Saturday, Sept. 15.
