Smith, Vick Named Athletes of the Week
September 17, 2012
Junior Taylor Smith (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) averaged 22 digs per match over five contests for the Keuka College women’s volleyball team while freshman Preston Vick (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) stopped six saves to pick up his second straight shutout for Keuka’s men’s soccer team.
On Monday, Smith and Vick were honored as Keuka College’s Athletes of the Week.
Smith totaled 111 digs over five matches and averaged 6.17 digs per set as Keuka (7-3 overall) went 3-2, including a 3-1 effort during the Hilbert College Invitational, held Sept. 14 and 15 in Hamburg, N.Y.
Facing Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday night, Smith recorded 19 digs during the four-set loss, and she followed that up with 54 digs during Keuka’s two matches Friday night at Hilbert College. Smith recorded 22 digs during a four-set win over D’Youville College and added a season-best 32 digs during a four-set loss to Fredonia State.
The 32 digs surpassed her previous season-best total by nine digs and represented the highest output of Smith’s Keuka career, besting her 28-dig effort during a four-set loss against Hamilton College on Oct. 22, 2011.
On Saturday, as Keuka was sweeping Keystone (Pa.) College and Hilbert College, Smith recorded 17 digs during the win over Keystone and added 21 digs against Hilbert.
Vick stopped all six shots he faced as the Storm (4-1, 2-1 NEAC) blanked Wells College, 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. Vick earned his second straight shutout, denying every good Wells scoring opportunity.
Vick, who stopped penalty kicks in back-to-back games last weekend, has only allowed five goals in 460 minutes in net, for a stellar 0.98 goals-against average (GAA). He has made 24 saves and sports an .828 saves percentage through five games.
Keuka returns to action with a pair of NEAC road games this weekend. Vick and the Storm will face Penn State-Harrisburg at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a 2 p.m. clash against Gallaudet University on Sunday.
