Volleyball Wins Seventh Straight
October 1, 2012
The Keuka College women’s volleyball team picked up its seventh consecutive win Monday night, sweeping Alfred University in a non-conference clash inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Sophomore Devan Curtis (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) posted a team-high eight kills with only two errors on 20 attempts for a .300 hitting percentage. She also added seven digs and three aces while junior Paige Golden (Kent, NY/Albion) added 9 digs, 8 kills and 1 ace for the Storm, which won 25-23, 25-10 and 25-17.
Keuka (12-3) has not lost since a four-set setback against SUNY Fredonia on Sept. 14, part of the Hilbert Invitational. This was the sixth time during the winning streak that the Green and Gold has swept a match, and the eighth time overall.
Junior Jill Nolan (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) had 13 assists, 7 digs and 2 aces, classmate Rachel Parker (Chaumont, NY/Thousand Islands) added 10 assists, 2 digs and 1 ace and junior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) chipped in 8 digs for the Storm.
Alfred (1-15) actually led several times in the first set, including 13-11 before Curtis won two service points to knot the score. Golden had two kills and Curtis added a kill to put Keuka up 20-17, but the Saxons hung tough and tied the set at 23-all.
With sophomore Julia Coryell (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) serving for the set, Golden delivered a kill to clinch the set.
Keuka pounced on the Saxons in the second set, taking an 8-1 lead after Curtis rattled off six consecutive service points. The Storm led by as much as 20-5 and breezed to the win for a 2-0 lead.
The early part of the third set was a back-and-forth affair, with the Storm taking a 6-5 lead on a Golden kill and a 12-10 lead on a Curtis kill.
After the teams traded points, Parker then went on a 6-0 service run as the Green and Gold took a 19-12 lead. With a 22-17 edge, Nolan won three straight service points, capped by a Curtis kill, to win the match in straight sets.
The Green and Gold hits the road for a 7 p.m. match at Wells College Tuesday night before a big weekend of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) competition.
Keuka, which won all three matches at the first NEAC crossover competition, faces Morrisville State and SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon and Cazenovia and SUNYIT on Sunday during the second crossover competition, at Cazenovia.
