November 27, 2012
Three student-athletes scored in double figures during Monday night’s home game against Hilbert College, but the Keuka College men’s basketball team dropped a 73-66 decision inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) scored nine of his 15 points in the second half while freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) added 12 of his season-high 14 points after halftime for Keuka (0-4).
Tuggles added six rebounds and Williams had four rebounds and three assists while sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) snared a team-high 10 rebounds with four assists in the loss as the Green and Gold out-rebounded the Hawks (4-1) 40-31.
Sophomore Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) added 11 points and five rebounds for the Storm.
Keuka trailed by as many as 19 in the second half, but Williams capped a 10-0 run with a free throw to pull the Storm within 52-42.
Trailing 62-53, Hixson made a spinning layup and then the Storm drew a charge before Williams made a layup to slice the deficit to 63-57 with 2:39 remaining, but Keuka never got closer than seven points and suffered the loss.
Thanks to a pair of ‘3s’ and three inside baskets, Hilbert raced out to a 12-2 lead over the first 4:24 before the Storm offense got on track.
Senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester), Tuggles, Hixson and sophomore Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) each scored baskets and Healey sunk a pair of free throws for the Storm.
When Tuggles made a layup with 11:37 remaining in the half, it capped a 12-2 spurt and knotted the score at 14.
Williams went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to slice the score to 21-20, but the Hawks used an 8-0 spurt to take a 29-20 lead with 6:13 remaining in the opening half.
Sophomore Joe Tortolon (Dundee, NY/Dundee) knocked down an open ‘3’ to pull Keuka within 29-23, but the Hawks took a 37-27 lead into halftime. Eight different student-athletes scored in the opening half for the Green and Gold.
Dan McFarland led the Hawks with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists while Isaac Bushey added 12 points for Hilbert.
The Green and Gold travel to Hartwick College for a 7 p.m. non-conference clash Friday night before returning home to open North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. Morrisville State, the reigning NEAC postseason champions, comes to campus for an 8 p.m. game Wednesday night, Dec. 5.
