Gravel, Healey Named Athletes of the Week
December 10, 2012
Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) posted his first career double-double as the Keuka College men’s basketball team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with wins over Morrisville State and SUNY Cobleskill.
Junior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) averaged 14.5 points, 6 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.2 assists per game as Keuka’s women’s basketball team also picked up a pair of NEAC victories to head into the break on a five-game winning streak.
On Monday, Healey and Gravel were selected Keuka’s Athletes of the Week.
Healey scored a career-high 12 points and snared a career-best 10 rebounds, and four members of the Storm reached double-figures in scoring as Keuka knocked off defending NEAC champion Morrisville State, 59-50 on Wednesday night.
The win snapped an 11-game losing streak.
Keuka led for much of the game and took a 30-22 lead into halftime. Healey made two layups while sophomore Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) drilled a ‘3’ for the Storm’s largest lead, 37-22. Morrisville eventually pulled even at 47 before the Storm went on a 7-0 run to take control for good.
Healey helped seal the win by making a pair of free throws in the final minute.
The Green and Gold limited a potent Morrisville State offense that came in averaging 79.3 points per game to 29 points below its season average. Keuka enjoyed a 43-30 edge in rebounding.
Then on Saturday at Cobleskill, Healey scored 14 points with five rebounds during an 82-69 overtime win over the Tigers.
Keuka started fast and led 30-19 before Cobleskill used a 17-2 run to close out the first half ahead 36-32. After the deficit grew to 38-32, Healey took over, making three straight jumpers along with a blocked shot to tie the score at 38 with 15:41 remaining.
Neither team led by more than four points the rest of regulation. A pair of free throws from senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) put Keuka ahead 61-59 with 2:52 remaining before Cobleskill used a 7-2 run to take a 66-63 lead on Mike Marcelin’s jumper with 20 seconds remaining.
Senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) made his first career ‘3′ to force OT, and the Storm outscored Cobleskill 16-3 in OT to improve to 2-5, 2-0 in NEAC play.
An aggressive 2-3 zone defense limited Cobleskill to 0-for-8 shooting in overtime, and just 20 percent (5-for-25) on ‘3s’.
Gravel, who earned first-team All-NEAC as a sophomore, scored 13 points with 7 rebounds and 2 steals during Wednesday night’s 65-44 win over Morrisville State.
Keuka actually trailed 28-25 at halftime before using a 23-0 second-half run to pull away. Gravel scored six points during the spurt, including a big ‘3′ to pull the Storm within 34-33. She finished the game shooting 3-for-8 on ‘3s’.
On the road against Cobleskill on Saturday, Gravel scored 16 points with a season-most 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as the Storm (5-1, 2-0 NEAC) defeated Cobleskill 68-43.
With Keuka leading 21-18 midway through the first half, Gravel completed a three-point play to spark the Storm on an 11-0 run. The Green and Gold would go on a 17-0 run to open the second half en route to a fifth-straight win.
For the season, Gravel leads the Storm in scoring (15.3 ppg.) and is averaging 4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2 steals per game.
The men’s basketball team travels to Rochester for the Rochester Institute of Technology Harold J. Brodie Tournament, Friday and Saturday night. Keuka plays Manhattanville College at 6 p.m. on Friday night, and will face either RIT or D’Youville College in either the championship or consolation game.
The women are off for the remainder of 2012 before traveling to Penn State-Berks (Jan. 6, 2013) and Lancaster Bible (Jan. 7). Keuka’s next home game is vs. Gallaudet University at 1 p.m. on Jan. 12.
