Healey, Hixson Named Athletes of the Week

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games while classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) scored a career-high 19 points with seven rebounds as the Keuka College men’s basketball team advanced into the championship of the 28th annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament at Rochester Institute of Technology.
On Monday, Healey and Hixson were named Keuka’s Athletes of the Week.
Healey scored 17 points with 7 rebounds and 2 steals in Keuka’s 77-62 win over Manhattanville College in the first round of the tournament. Healey shot 6-for-8 (75 percent) from the floor and made 5 of 6 free throws in the win over Manhattanville.
Healey scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half while senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) added nine of his 11 points before halftime as the Storm used an 22-7 spurt to seize control and lead 38-31 at intermission.
After Manhattanville (5-4) pulled within 64-59 with 3:41 remaining, the Storm answered with an 11-0 run to pull away and win their third straight. Healey scored four points and Hixson had a big rebound and put-back during the run.
Hixson grabbed a missed shot and made the lay-in and on the ensuing possession, Healey snared a miss and scored for a 68-59 lead to clinch the Storm’s first three-game winning streak since Jan. 7-14, 2012.
In the championship game, Healey had 14 points and four rebounds in the loss to RIT as the Storm (3-6) enter the break winners of three of their last four games. Healey connected on 66.7 percent of his shots vs. RIT (6-for-9).
For the season, Healey is averaging 9.4 points and 6 rebounds per game, both second-most on the Storm.
Hixson scored a career-high 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting with seven rebounds as the Storm (3-5) enjoyed a 51-32 edge on the glass vs. Manhattanville.
Trailing 7-5, Hixson went to work, scoring on three straight possessions to put the Green and Gold ahead, 11-7.
With the shot clock winding down early in the second, Hixson collected a rebound and scored on the putback, his fourth make on his first five shot attempts. Hixson was fouled on the basket and finished the three-point play as he scored Keuka’s first eight points of the second half.
Against RIT, Hixson scored three points with six rebounds. Hixson and Tuggles were each named to the All-Tournament team for the Storm.
For the season, Hixson is averaging 7.3 ppg. and 4.2 rpg.
Keuka returns to action with road contests against Penn State-Berks (Jan. 6), Lancaster Bible College (Jan. 7) and Houghton College (Jan. 9) before hosting Gallaudet University at 3 p.m. Jan. 12, 2013.
