Basketball Teams Open 2013 on Road
January 4, 2013
Keuka College’s basketball teams enjoyed their holiday break, but the Storm’s men’s and women’s squads get back to work with a pair of road conference clashes this weekend.
Keuka travels to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Penn State-Berks for a doubleheader on Sunday, followed by a rare Monday doubleheader vs. Lancaster Bible College. The women will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday, followed by the men at 3 p.m. On Monday, the women play at 4 p.m., the men at 6 p.m.
The Storm women (5-1, 2-0 NEAC) have reeled off five straight wins since dropping their season-opener against Nazareth College, while Keuka’s men (3-6, 2-0 NEAC) have won three of four since starting the season 0-5.
Junior guard Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored 16 points with 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as Keuka routed SUNY Cobleskill 68-43 in the final game of 2012.
Senior Mariah Mouzon (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) added 10 points as eight different members of the Storm had five or more points. Mouzon shot 5-for-8 while sophomore Erica Pendrak (Utica, NY/New York Mills) scored eight points on 3-for-6 shooting as Keuka shot 42.2 percent (27-for-64).
Gravel (15.3 points per game) is one of three members of the Storm averaging in double-figures. Junior Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) is averaging 14.2 ppg. to go with 4 assists and 3.5 steals per game while Mouzon is averaging 11 ppg. and a team-best 6.7 rpg.
Keuka has defeated Berks 11 straight times and hasn’t lost to the Nittany Lions since Dec. 3, 2005. The Storm have never lost to Lancaster Bible since the Chargers joined the NEAC for the 2011-12 season.
For the men, sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) scored 14 points with four rebounds, but Keuka’s men suffered a 61-50 loss to host RIT in the championship of the 28th annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament in the final game of 2012.
Sophomore Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) added nine points and four rebounds while senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) chipped in eight points and three rebounds, but Keuka’s three-game win streak was snapped after RIT forced the Green and Gold into 17 turnovers.
Tuggles and sophomore Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) were named to the All-Tournament team for Keuka.
Tuggles leads Keuka in scoring average (12.8 ppg.) and assists (2.6 apg.), and five student-athletes are averaging at least seven points per game: Tuggles, Healey (9.4 ppg.), sophomore Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) at 8.1 ppg., Starks (7.9 ppg.) and Hixson (7.3 ppg.).
Senior Conor Boyer (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) leads the Green and Gold in rebounding (6.2 rpg.) followed by Healey (6 rpg.).
The Storm handed Berks a 72-67 setback on Jan. 8, 2012 and have won two of the last three meetings with the Nittany Lions. Like the women, the men have not lost to Lancaster Bible since the Chargers joined the NEAC.
Neither live stats nor a live video feed will be available from this weekend’s games, but check www.KeukaStorm.com, www.Facebook.com/KeukaStorm and on Twitter @KeukaAthletics for in-game updates when they are made available.
Following this weekend’s action, the men travel to Houghton College for a 7 p.m. non-conference clash Wednesday night before both squads return home to host Gallaudet University Jan. 12. The women tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men playing at 3 p.m.
