Mouzon, Healey Named Athletes of the Week

February 18, 2013

Senior Mariah Mouzon (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) became just the 10th student-athlete in Keuka College women’s basketball history to surpass 1,000 career points, while sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) recorded another 20-point game during men’s basketball’s regular-season finale.

On Monday, Mouzon and Healey were selected Keuka College’s Athletes of the Week.

2012-Mariah-Mouzon-AOWMouzon, a forward, scored 13 points to join the 1,000-point club during Saturday’s 81-57 win over Wells College in Keuka’s regular-season finale.

Mouzon posted her eighth double-double this year, adding 10 rebounds to power the Storm (19-3, 16-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference), who won the NEAC North Division regular-season championship for the second time in three years.

By hitting the front end of a one-and-one with 51 seconds remaining, Mouzon reached 1,000 career points and received an ovation from her teammates and the crowd. She was also presented with a commemorative ball marking the historic occasion.

Keuka earned the No. 2 seed for the upcoming NEAC postseason tournament, which starts Tuesday and continues Saturday and Sunday. The Green and Gold receive a first-round bye and will play the winner of the College of St. Elizabeth (11-13, 9-9) and Penn State Harrisburg (17-8, 13-5) in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Bible.

Keuka has won the NEAC postseason tournament and represented the conference in the NCAA Division III tournament in four of the last six years.

Saturday marked Mouzon’s 16th game scoring in double-figures, including six of the last seven games.

Mouzon leads the Green and Gold in rebounding (183) and rebounding average (8.3) and is third in points (254) and scoring average (11.5).

She also leads Keuka in field goal percentage, connecting on 49 percent of her shots (96-for-196), and ranks fifth in the conference in shooting percentage and 12th in rebounding.

2012-Trevor-Healey-AOWHealey, a forward, scored 20 points with seven rebounds, but the Keuka College men’s basketball team saw its season end with a 74-64 loss to Wells Saturday.

Keuka (10-13, 8-7 NEAC) needed a win over the Express to earn the program’s first postseason appearance since the 2009-10 season, but was outscored 21-10 down the stretch.

During a back-and-forth first-half, Healey scored 10 points, but the Green and Gold still trailed 32-30.

Trailing 50-49, Healey hit a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play to put Keuka ahead by one with 8:08 remaining.

Freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) then hit a pair of free throws for a 54-53 lead, but Wells responded with a 9-0 lead and led 62-54.

An offensive rebound and putback from Williams stopped the Wells’ run, and Healey hit two free throws and a lay-in as Keuka clawed within 64-61, but the Storm couldn’t pull out the win.

Healey led the Green and Gold in scoring average (14 ppg.) and rebounding (7.5 rpg.), and ranked second in points scored (307) and field goal percentage (51.3 percent).

His strong play helped Keuka reach double-figures in wins for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Healey scored in double-figures in 16 games, including 16 of the last 18 games.

Over his last 10 games, Healey scored 192 points (19.2 ppg.) with five 20-point games during that stretch.

Healey ranks sixth in the NEAC in rebounding average and 11th in both scoring average and field goal percentage.
