Men’s Volleyball Holds Off Southern Vermont

Three different student-athletes posted double-doubles as the Keuka College men’s volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak with a thrilling five-set win over Southern Vermont College Sunday afternoon inside the Weed Physical Arts Center.
Junior Devin Lesch (San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley) posted 11 kills and 11 digs, sophomore Manny Fernandez (Tacoma, WA/Spanaway) recorded 13 digs and 10 kills and freshman Connor Hinman (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) added 24 digs and 14 kills for the Storm (4-12).
Keuka won the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-19 before the Mountaineers (6-12) won the next two, 25-20 and 26-24.
In the decisive fifth set, an efficient Storm attack produced eight kills with only two errors in 14 attempts (.429 attack percentage) to clinch the win, 15-8.
Lesch added seven total blocks and Hinman had two blocks while freshman Josh Makin (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) added 8 digs, 5 kills and 4 blocks as the Green and Gold won for the first time since defeating Berkeley College and College of Mount St. Vincent Feb. 22 at the Bard College Invitational.
Hinman set a season-high in digs while Lesch set season-highs in both digs and kills. It was the first double-doubles of the season for Lesch, Fernandez and Hinman.
Sophomore Ryan Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) handed out 40 assists to go with 11 digs (both season-highs) and he added two aces and two blocks for Keuka, which picked up its first home win of the season.
Both Fernandez and Lesch had attack percentages above .225. Fernandez made three errors in 25 attempts (.280 attack percentage) while Lesch had only four errors in 31 attempts (.226).
Keuka hosts Wells College at 7 p.m. Tuesday. After the match, the first-ever spring Storm Madness pep rally will occur in the gym, as Keuka’s winter sports teams are honored for their accomplishments and the spring sports teams will be introduced to the campus and the surrounding community.
